Looking at buying an 18 A5 sportback

Hello everyone, I've been out of the audi world for a while and looking at getting back in. I found a 2018 Audi A5 sportback with 30k on. It looks to be almost fully spec'd out. It has the sport s-line package, digital cockpit, upgraded 19in wheels. I really fell in love with the car but after some research last night I'm seeing people are having issues with the rocker arms. What years did they effect? Is it all 2.0T motors? Is there anything else I should watch out for when looking for a pre-owned A5 sportback?

The rocker arm issue doesn't affect the 2.0 only the 3.0. I have the same car, 18' A5 with 55k on it, it's tuned and I haven't had any issues aside from the primary one with this car, which is the water pump. They have a tendency to crack and leak coolant, so when going on test drives smell around the engine bay. Also, the wastegate on the turbo is a minor issue that I've seen start failing more, which generally causes a CEL.

Thank you so much for the info. I'm looking between the A5 sportback and an Alfa Romeo Giulia. You don't see a lot of alfa's in my area, so it's kinda neat to have one, but the Audi Tech is more current and advanced.

Also how do you like your pixel fold.. I'm kind of a phone nerd as well lol

I drove the Guilia and it's a fun car, feels light and easy to maneuver. I like the bigger cars though and love the way the Audi handles, just feels like it's stuck to the road.

The pixel fold is one of the best foldables I've owned, and I've had a lot :) The only annoying thing is there are certain apps like Twitter that don't scale full screen in landscape, so you have to turn the phone to get a better experience. I'm hoping more app developers will add tablet mode to their apps.

I too enjoy the looks of the big body cars. I looked at the Stinger and Genesis as well. Stinger had crazy power just no luxury feeling and the Genesis had luxury feeling just no power which was strange since it's the same motor as the Stinger.

I had a fold 4 for about a week then went to the S23 ultra. I've been waiting for a local store to get the Pixel fold in so I can try it 😆

I really wanted to like the Genesis, just feels soulless though.

The zfold's main screen is way to skinny for me. The fold is perfect, I use the main screen about 70% of the time and it's perfect for everyday tasks.

A 2018 will be affected by the 3G turndown. You'll want to check the small dash compartment left of the wheel to see whether they installed the Mojio transmitter and how much space is lost if that piece was added. It's not a deal breaker but worth at least checking. The CD player also takes up most of the standard glove box in my 2018 RS5.

On the plus side, I like the VC instrument panel in mine and the wheel rather than touch screen controls.

It was definitely lackluster. So with the A5, do they have any oil consumption issues or cold start and just go issues? Is remote start standard on these? I unfortunately eat in my car for lunch breaks bc we don't have a break room. So the car kinda idles for an hour with the ac on or heat on depending on the time of the year.

That's great to hear about the Pixel fold, really wanna get my hands on one. I did though just order the Galaxy watch 6 classic, my watch 5 trade in was able to pick it up for 160

What all does the 3G effect on this model? I know certain manufacturers are having to update those modules bc it disables the emergency calling feature. The glove box space isn't a big deal bc I barely keep anything in there anyways lol. And yes the VC is sooo nice, definitely won't buy one without it.

No oil consumption on these engines. You can start and go. Just keep up with the maintenance and use quality oil and they'll run for a long while. I've talked with a few who have already put 150k on theirs with little issues. You should be fine with letting it idle, but make sure you have a few good drives each week and you'll want to consider changing the oil more often. Idling can cause excess blowby in the oil and thin it out.

That's great about the watch, looks like a good improvement from the 5.

Did not know about the water pump but I do notice coolant level dropping over months. I naively just refill but will have to investigate further.

How did you diagnose a faulty water pump if it’s a slow/minor leakage

The 3G turndown took out emergency calling and the Audi app for 2018s so you either use the Mojio device Audi offered or lose those two features.

If you look at the rear of the engine on the driver's side you'll see the water pump, it's black plastic. If it looks anything like this pic, it's leaking. dcce61bec23fccdc7ea1524ab3c60bffd43e9b05.jpg
