sounds excessive... there must be a better way...

around post #16... perhaps they are talking about that bolt... but $3k to take the rear apart and fix the issue? Very confusing

Have you gotten under there to actually see the issue yourself and see just how rusted it may be? You could always go to an independent place (not the general tire shop) and they could do your alignment, but unless it’s really bad seized or mangled up, it not that bad to unseize stuff. Also depends on if the tech tried anything and possibly made things worse. Could be they don’t want to try and cause damage and then they’d be on the hook for paying to replace it.

I will say this… if you’re in a snow state and your entire back suspension and subframe layout has major rusting, yeah, it’s a problem and would need to be all replaced. They however should be warrantying it if you’re still under the factory bumper to bumper because rust and failures are all cover under that and this would be premature rusting/seizing, environment or not. It’s not like you put the shit in the ocean. But, this is a good showing for why you should always try and rinse the suspension and under the car as much as possible when you wash it at home… especially if you drive it in winter with a ton of salt on the roads.

It's under the audi extended warranty and they said they don't cover rust and wear and tear?

    Again, sounds suspect.

Also, checked the bolt and it is rusted and the rear is rusted but it didn't look anything out of the ordinary to my untrained eyes...

If CPO doesn't cover deterioration due to environmental (eg, rust), then is what it is. But probably easier to cut the bolt out, clean up the wheel bearing housing, and just put a new one in.

You're looking at bolt 20, washer 21, nut 6. That joins upper control arm 7 to the wheel bearing housing 14.

Did they comment on the toe adjustment? That's bolt 11 on the subframe end of the track rod 10.

What you're describing doesn't sound like a 3k job... maybe they are just replacing everything instead of what you suggested?

They were able to adjust toe so it seems it wasn't a problem... which is also strange, right?

    Great info, thanks!

Yeah, they may be wanting to take the “safer” way out of it if they saw enough rust there to really be a safety issue, but they also probably want the money too. Lol
