    Time for an 01E swap...?

While driving to one of the biggest Audi meets here in CA (SLO summer drive) my transmission (01V) started acting funny. Was cruising in 5th (tiptronic mode) @80MPH the whole way. Whenever i had to get on the gas a little bit to pass someone, the transmission would go back to 4th and jump between 4th and 5th until i let off and manually put it back in 5th. The transmission would also not go into 5th if i was really getting into the gas. Its weird because i have the soft. coding of the transmission set to where it holds gears till redline, no matter what, and it used to do that up until this drive.

my question is: is my transmission going out, or should i do a fluid/filter change to see how it acts?

this is the second 01V the car has had, it was replaced in 2012 about 100K ago. car has 226K on it.

Ensure fluid level is topped off...you could try a valve body upgrade from TransGo and prolong the inevitable or swap to MT...those transmissions HATE above average heat so that could be an item one could address too...

100k is too long between fluid changes (drain and fill). That'd be my first suspicion.

    Also, why 01E vs 02X?

The transmission needs something but knowing what that us us half the battle...always do the easiest/cheapest first! Fluid level, inspect fluid color and/or it smelling burnt almost, VB uogalrade to make gear changes better and stronger, etc...might have to get dirty to check level but then you'll know!!

Draining and pulling the trans pan will give an indication of the transmission's condition. If you've just plain worn-out some of the clutch plates, there will be evidence in the pan and filter. Of course there will be some sludgy stuff, but if not horrible, such as flakes of Phenolic from disks, clean that all up and refit a new filter. Use a bit of Vaseline on the filter's seal, rather than ATF; it just works better. Fill it with your favorite ATF (I've always used Valvoline MaxLife synthetic) and see how it goes.

I did do a drain and fill about 4K miles ago, using valvoline maxlife. thinking about doing a full service this time and seeing where to go from there.

Been proven time and time again that 01E will take anything you can throw at it and ask for more, with cast iron housing it's proven, audi used the 016 which was the predecessor to the 01E in most if not all of their rally cars. Hell some later 016 transmissions could be modified and add a 6th gear making them a 01E.

I went with the O2X, considerably stronger than the five speed manual and plenty strong for most builds and smoother shifting than the O1E. Funny to see the same question on the facebook group, why not go with the O2X? Two years at 22 PSI on a stroked 1.8T and mine is still perfect.

But 01E is a 6speed manual also. I mean sure if the bushing are worn they can be sloppy, but with a decent kit and shorter throw I think its plenty stout for just about anything and just as good. Definitely proven also I haven't heard much about the 02X but that may be because I havent been down that rabbit hole yet. Always loved the 01E.

The improved shifting of the O2X is because of the newer synchro design and internal mechanism improvements. Trippel cone on first gear synchro doubles on the rest. It also has lower internal friction. A case can be made for the O1E, the O2X and the OA3. No one unit is perfect, its dependant on what you want and what you are doing. No question the O1E is strong, but that does not mean that its the only choice.

    Some good info:

Agreed. However I have a 01E out of B6 a4 3.0 it seems to have the updated collars in it which is a good sign. I've had 3 of these open so far all from 3.0 B6's and all seem to have the updated collars in them. Not sure if that's how they came but also good to know.

Only thing they currently offer for 01V valve body is a kit for rebuilding one valve (Pressure Regulator Valve). Is that what you mean?
