The Audizine Community - and the world at large - has lost one of its best with the passing of our friend and longtime Audizine Moderator, Nicholas Reed (AKA: OverSpun). As many of you know, Nick had been battling a form of leukemia called Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia, or 'ALL' for short. This awful disease had been wreaking havoc on Nick's body for approximately 14 years. Nick had just celebrated his 39th birthday, and unfortunately passed on April 29th, surrounded by his loved ones.
I still remember when I first met Nick. It was early 2000's and I was in Southern California for an Audi gathering. Afterwords a bunch of us grabbed food at a nearby restaurant, I believe it was actually a Hooters of all places. Pretty sure Nick wasn't even old enough to drink yet. The kid was all smiles, excited and eager to talk cars. I actually don't ever remember seeing him without a smile on his face. Even the last time we got together after he'd been battling cancer for several years at that point. He'd gone through tremendous amounts of chemotherapy by then, having lost his hearing as well. That still didn’t make him lose the smile though.
Nick was one of the youngest Mods we ever brought on board. I was a little hesitant at first but after meeting him in person I soon realized he was far more mature than most his age. Wise beyond his years, as they say. He went on to become one of the best, most dedicated, longest tenured Moderators we'd ever had. During those years he'd also help start an aftermarket tuning shop, organize several K1 clinics and track events, work with and befriend famous Hollywood car guys like Paul Walker (even assisting Paul with importing a C5 RS 6 Avant), create a foundation to raise awareness for ALL, as well as continue his college studies while still battling leukemia. His life was certainly cut way too short, but he still managed to accomplish more in that time than most people twice his age.
Nick had fallen extremely ill at the end of 2009 and was then diagnosed with ALL. I don't recall him ever make mention of wanting to give up or having a "woe is me" attitude. Back in 2010 when someone was unusually absent from the forums for a short time, people took notice. This was before most folks were distracted by a hundred other social media feeds. Shortly after we found out about the seriousness of Nick's illness, the community rallied together in a massive show of support. First in January 2010, we created a special fundraiser t-shirt, and again in March of that year we did a second round of awareness fundraising.
It was not only inspiring to see the immense outpouring of love from the Audizine family, but to witness the bravery of Nick and his battle over leukemia. For fourteen long - and no doubt grueling years - he continued to fight. Any time he was well enough to be on a computer, and cleared by his doctors to do so, he was helping the Audizine Community. He knew we all had his back, but I do hope he knew just how much of an inspiration he was to so many of us. His passion, his heart, his dedication, and of course his smile will all be sorely missed. His impact here at Audizine will live on indefinitely.
