Fitting snow chains - not allowed

Hi am hitting a snow area for the first time and will have to fit appropriate snow chain / cable to my front wheel.

Searching through manuals, this thing comes across as a surprise:

For technical reason, snow chains can only be fit with the following specific rim/tyre combinations:
    7Jx16 205/60
    7Jx16 225/55

Is it something to worry about? My rim size is 18.

Further: can I fit cable instead of snow chains? I only travel for one week.

I suspect the issue is not diameter, as all the tires are generally the same diameter regardless of wheel diameter. It's going to be the tire width most likely. If the chains aren't bashing the fender when you are at full lock, I'd guess they fit, so long as you're not at lock when you hit a bump and compress the suspension.

When you look in the actual workshop manuals, all the snow chain entries are 235 and narrower tires. The stock B8 A4 18" is 245/40r18 on 18x8.0 et47.

This is listed for the 8K 18":
    225/45r18, p/n 46193 (RUD - matic ("Kantenspur")), p/n 4F0 091 355 (RUD - matic (Disc))
whatever RUD (some manufacturer) and "matic" is.

This seems to be a winter tire only config for the 8K:
18x7.5 et43, 225/45r18 95H XL M+S winter tire, chains permitted on front (the p/n noted above).

So if you have that wheel size / tire size, good to go with those noted chains. But I suspect you have your normal sized 18s on, and with 245 tires, that seems to be a no go, at least from Audi.

I did a rough check - touching inner side with hands and could not concur with you more. The width is the deal breaker.

It is so close to suspension so I suspect that when making a hard turn, my 245mm wide tyre won't be clear enough for chain.

That brings up the topic of Glacier snow cable tire chian - advertised as with S clearance.

Model 1038 is said to be compatible with 245 45 18.

They look thin enough to fit with my clearance.

Anyone has a positive experience with this?
