    Hard downshifts ?

    Hey all.

Recently picked up a '23 RS5 back in early April. First time owning an Audi, coming from a Golf R. Had a bit of a rough start with it - improperly seated bump stops and then a major one with it needing a full mechatronics unit replacement. Took 4 weeks to get that particular part.

Got it back yesterday and I've noticed the downshifts while in sport mode or rs1 mode (all sport/dynamic custom settings in rs1 mode) have been very jerky. For example, coming to a slow stop from 40mph to 0 ends up having significant hard downshifts where it noticeably moves you forward.

I could be applying same brake pressure from 40 to 0 but as it's downshifting, each shift rocks me forward.

Now when I drove it for the first 3 weeks pre-mechatronics repair this wasn't an issue or noticeable at all. Just incredibly smooth shifting.

It doesn't do this in normal mode.

My question for you owners is the harsh downshifts expected behavior or am I running jt back for more warranty repair ?

It's totally normal. The 034 Motorsport transmission mount insert really helps smooth that rough shift (not totally gone but a good reduction).

Appreciate the response. I figured it was normal based off it being a performance vehicle and all. I was just off put by it since pre-mechatronics replacement it didn't have the downshift aggression at all.

Though, that may have been why it needed to be replaced too!

That insert is definitely something I'll grab.

    Cheers!

Two mods I've already completed on my '23 RS5 Coupe w/Comp Package - 034 Motorsports Strut Brace, and the ECS Tuning Poly Transmission Mount.

The mount has made the upshifts/downshifts much less jarring, because they are quite aggressive.

I actually prefer the shifting in non-sport mode. Much smoother. The throttle is sharper in Sport, but the transmission is jerky. I have found it less so when using sport in manual mode. Wish we could keep the throttle response of sport mode and the transmission shift of non-sport, but it is all or none.

    On order: Audi RSQ8 Performance

Try the transmission mount insert, it really makes the shifts smoother in Dynamic.

I suppose the real question is whether or not your transmission is behaving as intended by Audi. One quick way to check that would be to test drive another 2023 RS5 off the lot and see if it does the same thing. That way you can judge for yourself, and when the service department says it's normal, you compare it with your test drive.

I have a 2019 RS5, so my experience may be somewhat different. It's the same transmission, but apparently with modified tuning. I drive in Sport all of the time and the only time I ever felt a downshift that moved me forward was just before coming to a complete stop. The transmission would downshift and add to the braking power in a less-than-natural way, but it was around 10 mph, not 40 mph. The 034 transmission mount helped smooth out all of the shifting in my ZF, but the 034 TCU tune also seemed to reduce the effect of those weird downshifts, so it appears to be an issue with the stock TCU tuning.

But, I would start with a test drive of a new 2023 before jumping to any conclusions. The 2023 programming may just be more aggressive, or you may have a problem. A test drive can help you decide.
