I think my cars engine is dead and my cars been sitting for about a year in my backyard. I want to bring it back to life, anyone know where I can get this process started and best bang for buck option. I live in New Jersey.

You might want to start with more info on why it was parked in the first place. Why do you think the engine is toast? Mileage, symptoms, you know the basics as we aren’t mind readers.

    Lol yeah you’re right
Well I was driving on the nj turnpike one day after work and all of a sudden I started losing engine power and eventually got stranded on the side of the road, long story short I got it towed to the mechanic and he said based on how the engine was moving when we tried to turn it on he assumes one or more rods are bent but that’s just his opinion I don’t know for sure but I guess he’s right idk? Engine has a little bit over 200k so I’m thinking getting a rebuilt engine or a salvaged engine is a good start just don’t know where I can even get a used engine that would fit my car. It’s a 6 speed 2.0T. I’m willing to spend the money to get it back running maybe one of you audi guros can help me

Sounds like you’re probably not equipped to troubleshoot this yourself from what i’m reading, no offense. First step would be find a different mechanic that isn’t going to try to start the engine and say “welp, sounds like all your rods are bent!”

Second step would be to pay said mechanic to fix your car.

That’s your best and probably only option in this scenario based on your situation as described and based on your troubleshooting abilities and level of resourcefulness.

Getting an engine out of a junkyard is a crapshoot. Even a place like LKQ is a gamble IMO. If you want the cheapest running option I’d start looking for a lowish mileage rust bucket to scavenge the engine from.

If I did want to get a another engine where would I start to look for one? Do y’all think someone on this forum might have an engine for sale?

ok let's slow down.....everyone is jumping to the solution and we havent even defined the problem..

    1. what is your mechanical aptitude ? are you able to remove the front Inspection panel and see if the timing belt is snapped or stripped ?
    2. are you able to put it in neutral and see if both the Intake and exhaust cams are turning when you turn the crank (19mm I think ) by peering in the oil fill hole ? ( snapped chain ) , or even better, take the valve cover off ?. then at least you might know what you are dealing with. then it just might be a head r and r and have the head sent out for new valves. still cheaper and less work then a suspect new engine from somewhere else .

rods rarely get bent but a timing chain and tensioner at 200k is right on time to fail.
if you can do these things you have nothing to lose but your labour and you might learn a thing or 2 along the way.

Let’s not enable this guy here… He needs to figure out what is even wrong with his car first.

100% agree with iceman. A few simple test can get your some answers. More likely the timing belt, or cam chain snapped. As he said, that would be just a head refurb, or swap. Much, much easier and cheaper..
Even a video of it turning over. Loss of compression has a very familiar sound

I will post up a video as soon as I can so that way it helps. I disconnected my battery so I’ll have to put that back and have my brother record it while I try to turn it on.

Easy guys, he asked a question and I answered it with a bit of advice. By no means was I suggesting he go straight to replacing the engine.

Assuming you unfortunately had a timing chain snap I have a like new head for sale. This would only be helpful if you know how to put it on. But if you are in need it be willing to sell it for pennies on the dollar. Good luck in your trouble shooting.

Based on the video sounds like you have lost compression. You also have lateral movement on your exhaust cam as it spins around....thats not ideal If you don't want to tackle repairing this, find a good mechanic and they should be able to give you a decent quote. It probably won't be cheap. I just rebuilt my 2.0t and I had about $3,500 into it. I did all the labor, so that $3500 was just parts. Before i decided to rebuilt it myself i had a shop give me a quote of around $5,500. A good re-man head will run you around $1200. And if your rear timing chain broke, which I'm guessing it did since you lost compression which means you have bent intake valves, you will have sent some amount of metal throughout the engine. That's why I did a complete engine rebuild. Hope this helps.

im curious now, definitely no compression, pop that oil cap off and tell us if the intake cam is moving when you crank.

Imma guess a broken cam.. Lock at the cam sprocket, when hes turning it over.. Pull the VC off, bet you'll find your damage.
Question is, why did it break? Often seen that happen with loss of oil pressure. Journals get hot, seize up, and crank keeps spinning the cam sprocket.
You may get away with a new/used head, but id also drop the sump, and go over your oil pump/BS assembly.
If your paying for labor, a rebuild will be pricey! Be better if ya can find a used engine, but ya still gotta go over all the common failure points before dropping at in. Either way, its gonna cost.
Im doing a basic refresh on mine soon. Forged rods, rings, bearings, lifters/rockers, etc. Prob only about $1k in parts, but font be paying for labor.
So ya should dig a little deeper, and then ya can decide what ya wanna do.

before anything else I think you should take your valve cover off. it’ll take no more than an hour and you’ll get so much more info on what the culprit could be than you ever could with it on. Whatever the issue is you’re going to need to pull the valve cover regardless, so you’ve got nothing to lose by doing it, and everything to gain.

taking off the valve cocer is very straight forward,, just take off what you see... take off the coil packs, then take the bolts out of the cover., undo a couple of hoses. . its about as straight forward as it gets.

whether or not you end up being able to get your valve cover off without any instructions should be the test that confirms whether or not you should be tackling this job further on your own. It’ll be a good aptitude test.
