TT 20th anniversary edition rebuild thread

Hi all,

After rebuilding a 2016 TT Roadster couple of years ago I want to replace my '15 Audi A3 quattro (it will be for sale in 2-3 weeks) with 152K miles. Stumble onto 2019 TT coupe 20th anniversary edition. It's in pretty bad shape but I hope to have it rebuild by the end of the summer. The car was delivered yesterday and after I swapped the batteries with my other TT it started on it's own. No issues with engine, transmission or power steering. So far my estimate is: all airbags, hood, fender, headlights and radiator pack. I have leftover bumper, crashbar and grille from my previous build so that will reduce the cost a little. I'll try to document the process as much as I can.

Really like that interior color! Restoring the TT seems like a really big undertaking. Look forward to seeing your progress. Godspeed!

I just finished rebuilding 2022 VW Taos for my little daughter and believe it or not,it's easier to restore the TT. It's older design and parts are available from other models. I just got a radiator, intercooler and AC condenser for $300 from A3 8V. Just one radiator for Taos was $280. On the other hand Audi parts are with padded premium when bought from the dealer. VW steering airbag is $180 where Audi is $580.

Picked up the radiator and intercooler today, connected them and filled the cooling system with distilled water to check for leaks. Good news is system stayed pressurized and went up to temp. Removed the deployed airbags and seat belts. Next step is to get the control module out and send them to be reset. While waiting for them to come back will place the order for the big items: hood, fender, radiator core support, airbags etc.

The seatbelts and control module are on it's way back. While waiting I decided to test fit brembo callipers that I run on my other TT. They are from B9 A4/5 and fit stock rotors. The stock wheels also fit without spacers. For reference first picture is with stock calliper.

It's been a slow progress. There was an issue with the airbags control module. It came with missing config file. I had to send it back. Finally came back last Friday and now I can read it again. Knee airbag is installed. I installed also the driver seat airbag but ran into an issue. With everything in place there is 1/4" gap between the bolster and the plastic trim on the side. It looks like the bolster frame got bent when the airbag released. I need to disassemble the upper seat and bring the frame back to the manufacturer specifications. I will pickup the last two airbags this Saturday so by the end of Sunday the interior will be complete.

I also stop at the body shop today. They will have my Taos ready by Monday. I will drop the TT when I pick up the other car. The game plan is to straighten driver side shassy leg and replace the passenger. The legs are used also in Audi A3 8V so they can easily be found from junkyards. I already got all body panels so the work can start right away.

On a side note: I have issue with my TT roadster that I rebuilt 2 years ago. The power steering quit while my daughter was driving it last week. I have B2000 and B200F error codes. I need to replace it since those cannot be erased. I will pickup second hand rack on Saturday and tackle this job on Sunday too. Fun times...20230711_183614.jpg

Got home around 4PM and decided to "quickly" install the steering wheel and curtain airbags. An hour later the interior is all buttoned up. Still need to take apart that driver seat.

Not much changed since the last post.i had hard time booking a body shop with frame jig that can handle aluminum frame. 4 of them just refuse to get involved because "the job is too big and we have too much insurance work". They didn't even want to see the car.

Finally the body shop guy (my first choice) came last week to take a look at the car. I might have gotten lucky. The passenger side shassy leg snapped from the spot welds on the back underneath the engine mount. The leg itself is actually straight. He said he should be able to pull it back and weld it without replacing any parts. I am bringing the car in the shop next week. I need to pull the engine off the car. Planning to do it this weekend.

As far as the rest of the car - I replaced the battery last week and everything works without issues.

Got busy today. Engine and transmission are out. Started at 9am and finished around 5pm. Now the car is ready to be dropped off at the frame shop. I still think passenger side leg needs to be replaced.

After almost 2 months at the body shop I got the TT back home. Today I put the engine and transmission on the car. Radiator core support and the crash bar mounted straight up. I need to connect a couple coolant lines, fill it with coolant and should be able to start it.

Ha Ha... The body shop removed the shocks and forgot to put them back. I'm going back there to pick up the fenders and the bumper on Tuesday.

Filled the coolant and fitted a few small bits and pieces. The car started right up. Took it for a test drive up and down the street. All errors cleared out except the obvious - missing headlights. I need to order them next week and the build will be complete.
