    Climate control swap

I have a 09 Audi B8 A4 and I had a issue with my climate control panel. So I purchased a used one and when I installed it everything was easy except the only thing that lights up is the off light. So I scanned it using VCDS and it says it's in protection mode. So when I switch over to VCDS it's looking for a 5 digit or 7 digit security access code. I don't have one so I'm wondering does anyone on here know where I get that code for the HVAC? It's a dual climate control with front seat heaters.

    Thanks Chuck

No, the security access code is not the same as being in component protection mode.

Lots of the control modules in the vehicle are registered to the CAN gateway module. When the control module powers up, it exchanges with the CAN gateway who it is. If the "serial number" doesn't match what the CAN gateway had registered, the control module drops into the component protection operation. What that means varies from control module to control module. I guess in the case of the 08-auto hvac, that's "don't work at all".

You have to have the CP reset by someone with ODIS access. Dealership, a shop that has such, an individual that has such, etc. But it's not something you can do with VCDS or OBDeleven or such. You can hack it with VCP (Vag Com Pro), or do some chip swapping if you like surface mount soldering. Or just pay the 1hr at the shop (it only takes 5-10 minutes) to clear it.

Oh ok thank you...yeah I will make an appointment with my local dealer. Do you know if I can take it to a VW dealer? Or does it need to be a Audi dealer?

    Thanks Chuck

I don't know if a VW dealership would do ODIS work on an Audi and vice versa. One would think it should be able to, it's all "VAG" on the back end. Buy you know how turf wars can be.
