    Shift linkage difference

What is the difference between 01E shift linkages in the S4 and A6? I know the S4 one pictured is weighted, but does that make a difference? Is there a reason that the B5 S4 wouldn't work? I asked JHM and they just said use the correct one for your car. Their customer service is generally unhelpful. Screenshot_20230515_211448_Chrome.jpg

I would except I think I need to replace replace the shift shift link (I think that is what it is called). I was replacing my slave and if I grab the link, I can rattle it back an forth. I don't know if the wedge is missing or it is worn down or what.
