    Replacing ATF with correct color

After a while with struggling with torque converter codes i decided It might be worth it to do a quick change of fluid in the hopes of elongating the life of the car. Except I’ve run into the old fluid color/version. My tranny info said it was running 005 version of software but the fluid seems orange/tan versus the newer blue and green.
is it possible they updated TCM and refilled it with original fluid or should I ignore the VAG info and order the same color. ZF 8 (green) was so much cheaper than the original (orange) fluid and id hate to spend 4x as much so wondering if I can get away with mixing them.
Running the 6 speed tiptronic. pics added for reference. Many thanks!!

050 software should use LG8 fluid. I think the only ones that came with the early fluid, is possibly some of the early 05.5's. Its possible someone changed it previously, and put wrong fluid in. May be why your having issues? Now I would do a full filter/fluid, which will swap about half. Then maybe a few drain/fills after, changes about 3 liters each time.
Also, what year is your b7?
Sode note, there is an update(080), but not sure what it changes. Asked the dealer once, and they didn't have a clue, lol.

    Its a 2005. Manufacture date of 03/05. So I’m thinking it’s an “early” 05
While reading up I came across a post, pointing out how our cars were shipped with a default software version designated “0020” and which eventually would get several updates (up to “0080”)
This number being different would indicate an update to the software and therefore (hopefully) an update to new color fluid.
I decided, perhaps erroneously, to order the kit according to my “0050” software version without checking my current fluid.
However if the car did indeed get a partial update I assume I’m in for a system flush since green and blue are interchangeable but not with the orange/amber fluid.
Again thanks for the reply! 🙏🏻

Yeah, ultimately, you wanna go by the software. The 080 was a recent update, released maybe 2 years ago.

Great info brother. Ultimately it’s either this or replacing TC/tranny so I’m gonna take a leap of faith. Do a couple changes and look into updating it. Greatly appreciate the feedback. Doing a refill this weekend, will report back the results. 👍🏻

I would do a pan drop, and filter the first time. That way you'll swap about 5 liters(half). Then do a few drain/fills afterwards. Just an FYI, ZF Lifeguard 8 is on sale at FCP right now for $15/liter, which is a good price.

What does a dealership charge for trans software update? I have an 05.5 and still at 020..

If it's a lot, would it be better just to go with a TCU tune like JHM? Wouldn't that overwrite the dealership software and be better performing?

If your still on 020, theyre gonna need to do a full trans service also. They'll need to swap all the fluid(flush) and filter, for the newer software.
JHM's tcu tune is for 2006-08, for some reason. The fact that some 05.5's have old software/fluid, may be the reason. Thought maybe it had a dif tcu, but that could also be the reason, not sure.. But i know its not available for the 2005.5.
I have the tcu tune to flash, but haven't done it yet. After doing my trans service, i never did the reset and adaptation process. Wasn't sure if i should do that first, or if its wont matter cuz of the new software. The adaptation is to reset the pressures and such, is believe, since new fluid will act differently.
But you'll need service and software. So imma take a guess at close to $1k for dealer. But best to just call and ask them.

The b6 and b7 are different in their TCU placement. In 05.5 and earlier the TCU lives in the transmission, and would need to be removed to do the flashing. Thats why TCU tunes are usually only available for the 06 and up.

Oh, ok. So the early b7(05.5) is the same as the b6? Didn't know why, was just taking a guess. Just know they don't tune the 05.5. That makes more sense, lol.

Yes. 05.5 is technically a b6. I've owned my 05.5 for many years and it started life as an auto before I manual swapped it. I too was looking for a tune and found out why they didn't make one for it.
