Bought another B5 S4. Looking for advice on getting it on the road

Hey Audizine family. It's been forever since I've been on here. It's been nostalgic and I'm glad to be back.

On my way to work, I've been passing by a 2001 audi s4 for years and finally took the time to stop by and inquire about it. Long story short I pulled the trigger and bought the car from him, which makes me an owner of two silver 2001 audi B5 S4's! However both cars have been sitting in the driveway for years. and need help to figure out which of the two I should repair or if possible both. Do you guys have any recommendations like thorough inspection guides or mechanics in the Boston area would be tremendously helpful. I would love to get one of them on the rode in about a month.

Have a great day and thank you in advance!

Check the engine fluids in both of them, and if ok, put a battery in them and see if they will run. If they run,let them warm up and check coolant temps, heater output, assuming they are manuals, operate clutches, try to select gears, let the clutch out and roll them back and forth a little, checking brakes, power steering, head lamps etc. , to give you some kind of a baseline condition. Then you can move forward with repairs, or decide to scrap one or both.

Thanks AvantGuard, I went over the audi that I bought recently. Fluids look more or less okay except for the coolant is low. If there aren't major issues I was thinking of changing all the fluids eventually. Bought a new battery and the car cranks but won't start. Replaced the spark plugs but still the same experience. From what I read, a car needs fuel, spark, compression, and timing to start. I'm either leaning toward changing the coil packs or reviewing the fuel pump system next. On a 01 audi s4 thats sat for years, what is the most likely culprit?

P.S. I'm also trying to find my vagcom, I switched of to owning a Mac, does anyone know if the vagcom works on a windows virtual machine?

I would base my decision on whichever car is structurally in better shape. Rust likes to hide everywhere in these.

If the cars have sat i would get as much gas out of the tank as possible, change fuel filter, chuck some new gas in and see if it starts.

Get VCDS now if you dont have it.

Lots of good advice in this thread. If you need a vagcom, let me know, I might be able to help depending on where you are in the Boston area.

Hey OP, were you able to make any progress? Offer still stands to lend you the VCDS tool if you need it.

    Hope all is well.

Good point, there is the white light dust on the engine on the second Audi that I purchased that could be rust. I still want to turn on this car and see how the engine/transmission/turbos are before making a decision. Thanks for the advice.

To be certain you're probably right. The tank was below the E=Empty marker, so I want to assume it was almost dry. I'm going to work on the fuel pump/fuel relay/fuel filter in the next couple days. I'll let you know how it goes.

Dana Horan/Workshop in Chelmsford has done a bunch of items on my 01 avant recently. Good work, good pricing, easy to work with (didn't mind that I supplied some of my own parts). I think Workshop will be doing 100% of the work on my cars going forward.

If you end up needing to buy a new VAGCOM and you're not planning on doing any data logging, the wifi model seems to work well and is OS-agnostic because it just uses your web browser. If you're planning to do data logging, your best bet with a Mac is probably Bootcamp. I was never able to get things working reliably with a VM, although it's been probably 10 years since I last tried. Booting natively into Windows via Bootcamp always worked without any trouble.
