    OBD2 scanner

This is one thing every Audi vehicle should have in their glovebox, I bought an A3 sportback a few years ago, a 2002 it was a lemon, and this handy scanner will give you a way for you not to get ripped off by a mechanic , although their scanners cost thousands of dollars, I paid $100 for this one and it is specialised for Audi's and VWs, now I have my new Audi it keeps me on the ball , even if the car is running well I check it once a month as codes may not cause symptoms, so do yourself a favour and pick up one of these they are great quality for the price, I am not affiliated with Ancel and I don't know anyone who works for them.

Nice but a legit copy of VCDS is more useful.

Most use vcds. Best diag tool for VAG cars.. Can get a 3VIN for $220/shipped. Unless your just looking for basic stuff, then that one is prob fine.

There is a version of the dongle that supports connection via wifi so you can use a desktop however a windows based tablet is the most useful means of connecting to it. Doesn’t need to be the most powerful so many older (cheap) units will suffice. Big difference between VCDS and your type of scanner is the Ross tech forum support and the ability to code modules.

I've had 5 codes and was able to remove all of them without forking out for a mechanic to charge the price of this OBD2 just to plug their scanners in, I still wouldn't be without it. So for Audi drivers who do not modify their cars and use them to get from A to B this unit is ideal, plug and play you don't need to use a third party, cut out the middle man and get to the source of any codes yourselves, if you are weekend mechanics with the source of the code known, you may be able to fix it yourself, a lot of codes are sensors, or maybe your spark plugs need changing, or injectors all work easily done by yourself and you will only pay for parts not $100 an hour mechanic. I hope this helps. RossTech just has a list of codes and what they mean correct me if I'm wrong, but using both together would give you more information??? I really tried to direct this towards people who wouldn't know what an OBD2 port was or where it is back to basics, due to misunderstanding they probably think it's an OBD11 port as I've seen them called more times than I would have imagined. Thanks mate.

You can read and clear codes with a $10 scanner. The difference with vcds is you can actually read live data, do adaptations, data logs, etc.
And OBD11 is another VAG diag tool, similar to vcds. Its OBDeleven(pro).

What is it with forums, it's full of brain-dead idiots like you who just want to sound smart, I don't care about the other crap you can use on your STD machine and neither do 90% of Audi owners , I would never use a $10 piece of crap or even tell people about them as they can mess up your ECU you can buy 4 for $10 I have no issue recommending a unit made for use on Audi's, real life blah blah blah, if you don't have anything relavant to say, I'd learn to keep my mouth shut. Blah blah blah.

Its is relevant. Sorry if you keep getting offended, but thats not my fault. You said people call it obd11 instead of obd2, but obd11 is a VAG specific tool. Its not people calling their obd2 port the wrong thing, lol.
And if you have that just to clear codes, then a $10 scanner will do that. That wont "ruin your ecu". C'mon man, seriously, where you get this stuff?
There are a lot of scanners out there that are like this one, kinda in the middle. Overpriced for just code reading/clearing, but don't so enough like vcds, to use for actual fiagnostic work.
You said "3.2l so not modding", when I mentioned that most oeoole use vcds. But vcds isn't used for nodding, its for diag, coding when changing modules, can use to retrofit features, run adaptations, etc.
Don't get mad when someone just tries to give you info, and sorry if i "sound smart"

i didn't read all the drama.

i have a wifi dongle and us it to monitor real time data while driving such as boost, etc it's very nice, and I use it to reset my p499 on the fly I get about 4 times a year. it was about 10 dollars
I also have vcds on my old laptop for in-depth troubleshooting , coding and logging. I think the combination of these two fits my needs perfectly .

The blue ELM327 dongle, and torque app? They work good for the basic stuff, when on the road, and only $10-$15. Know a few people that use those. I started with an Obdeleven pro(before subscription), so keep that in the car, and use vcds for logging and actual diag when needed.

I've been using a $30 Autel AL319 for years. Great little gadget. Does live-streams also. This has helped me diagnosed many problems. I'm thinking about getting Vagcom, but then again what if I won't be havng the car for that long?

Well, if ya dont have the car long, you'll have it if ya got another Audi. Of ya dont, sell it. Ya buy a 3VIN, you'll have 2 left if ya sell it.

I'm sorry that I want to educate people, the port is called an OBD2 port, the confusion comes from when these ports were first used it was called an OBD1 port the next logical step is an OBD2 port for some reason it was an OBD11 port which if you add 1+1 you get 2, you can call it Charlie's chocolate factory for all I care, but it's an OBD2 port. And I still recommend it for any Audi owner, as a good quality code scanner, it's cheap and will save you $$$$$ getting a mechanic scan your car, but there are other options you can look into which is best for you , using Google the biggest source of information on the planet, in fact 99% of all related questions that people turn to forums for can also be found with a quick search on Google.

Were not talking about the port, lol. We all knownits an obd2 port.. OMG. You said your see people referring to obd11 on forums, which you said was incorrect, lol. They aren't talking about the port, theyre talking about OBD11(OBDeleven), which is a popular wifi dongle, similar to vcds, but for your phone. Second best VAG specific scanner for these cars. Hopefully you get it now??

Ok I never knew about a totally seperate option called an OBD11 and I thank you for clearing that up for me, I don't mean to come across as a dick, if it was made clearer to me I won't continue to be, so again thank you. I won't make that mistake again.

Obdeleven used to be an excellent option, for someone that wont get too in depth. It was $80 and done, and could do basically everything vcds scan. Its just not as good for logging, but can do it.
Then they came out with a "gen 2", and the pro version is now subscription. So its no longer as good of a deal, compared to vcds.
1 good thing, is its not VIN limited like vcds. But you can do lots of things, in other cars, without using a VIN(vcds).
Since going subscription, I think it makes more sense now just to get a vcds cable.
I still have my Obdeleven, and keep in in my car. If I gotta do any real logging, or diag work, I pull out the laptop/vcds.

+1, just chased a missfire on my mom's b8, so I live data the 4 cyl, checked the fuel pressure and checked the chain tensioner position.

found that was carbon built. Saved me a lot of time.

log, live data, all module scan, manual or automatic coding. very powerful and useful tool.

Thanks mate I'll look into it for now fingers crossed she's running like a champ, 126k miles full Audi maintenance book nearly all stamped by Audi, I have been chasing an oil leak, mechanic reckons it's the rear main seal, that is where the oil is dropping from but the oil seems to be coming from above the seal, I'm thinking valve cover gasket , other than that I got an awesome deal so to pay for the rear main seal it would still be worth doing, 1 lady owner and I paid $1265us I know if it seems to good to be true it probably is it, but no , not 1 scratch or dent all panel spacing straight as all round, I think the oil was leaking when I bought it, if it was the main seal after a year of driving a code or CEL light would be flashing, any ideas would be awesome.

Valve Cover Gasket is really easy to spot and fix. Let's just hope it is not the Rear Main Seal, which I thought to be pretty rare on certain models of these cars.

[QUOTE=80sGuy;14930659]Valve Cover Gasket is really easy to spot and fix. Let's just hope it is not the Rear Main Seal, which I thought to be pretty rare on certain models of these cars.[/QU

Hi I just watched a quick video, and that's an easy DIY job I've done it before on 4 cylinder I just have to do that twice, before I do I'm going to make sure it is the gaskets, if it is I'll get a new pair and fit, them , no need for a mechanic probably saved $300.
