Traction control light on and P1653

Hello all, I've done some digging and still cant determine the correct route to go on this. About a year ago I replaced my battery (with OEM) and ever since I've gotten the traction control warning light on. Occasionally when driving the throttle will cut out and the car will immediately start hard braking and make a grinding noise, when this happens the traction control light flashes. The only way to get around this is to restart the car. I scanned it and have a P1653 - Please check DTC Memory of ABS controller. I went ahead and replaced the brake light sensor but that doesn't appear to have solved the solution. My next bet would be a wheel sensor but how do I determine which one? Worse case is it seems I may need a new ABS controller module which will run around $2k.

Any help or ideas on this would be greatly appreciated.

These cars are finicky with batteries. From what I understand, the battery requires programming to the car with a special tool, lots of people here own what's called VCDS or VAG-COM.

I'd definitely at least find either a shop or purchase the tool to specifically be able to check the stored codes in the ABS module if the one you've used can't specifically- if your battery hasn't been programmed, that tool should be able to do it too
