It is the Air quality sensor for the HVAC system. Expensive to replace. Should mount onto the side of the Air Intake for the HVAC, mount must have broken and it fell down. It is supposed to sense pollutants in the air and kick the system into an air recirculation mode until it senses cleaner air again.

Clips into the edge of the grid over the top of the duct to the fresh air intake, item 13:
