Adding Heated Steering and New Combi Switch - Dynamic Steering Calibration Needed?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Gurus,

Having recently acquired a '19 P+ with the Sport package but without the Cold Weather Package, I've decided to retrofit a heated steering wheel. I suppose that makes me a Warmduscher in the eyes of my German friends, but after having this in my last two rides, I really miss having toasty fingers in the winter...

Q1: The retrofit will require swapping out the combination switch that houses the wiper, turn, and cruise stalks. I believe that in addition to resetting the steering angle sensor that I'll also need to have the dynamic steering recalibrated. Can anyone confirm this for me?

Q2: For those of you who have already had Audi recalibrate your dynamic steering, what did this cost?

    TIA -
    GG

Replacing the J527 means you'll need to run the G85 steering angle sensor basic setting (calibration).

3.15 Steering Angle Sensor - G85- Basic Setting

Special tools and workshop equipment required
    ♦ Vehicle Diagnostic Tester
    ♦ Steering Wheel Scales - VAS6458-

This basic setting should be selected after the following actions:
♦ Settings to the suspension were changed.
♦ The Steering Column Electronics Control Module - J527- was replaced.
♦ The Active Steering Control Module - J792- was replaced.
♦ The steering column was replaced.
No idea what/how that VAS6458 is used: https://audi.snapon.com/SpecialTools...temId=61830108

    Dynamic steering basic setting (calibration):

    4.3 Dynamic Steering Basic Setting
There are two choices for the basic setting:

    The “complete alignment”
This procedure must be selected for the following activities if a wheel alignment and basic setting should be performed.
♦ The front axle toe was adjusted.
♦ The rear axle toe was adjusted.
♦ The vehicle suspension was changed, for example changing from standard to sport suspension.

    The “quick access”
This procedure should be selected for the following activities if only the basic setting will be performed.
♦ The Steering Angle Sensor - G85- was calibrated.
♦ The Active Steering Control Module - J792- was replaced.
♦ The steering wheel is crooked when driving straight.

    Note
♦ Both procedures are programmed in the wheel alignment computer. The respective procedure is performed automatically. It is only necessary to select the appropriate program for the procedure that will be performed.
♦ If the basic setting should be performed, then the “quick access” mode must be selected.
♦ The procedure in the “quick access” mode is described in the following.
So looks like you get to do the quick dynamic steering basic setting rather than the full.

If you're just rolling in to get the two done, probably just a one hour labor and out.

Perfect. I can now have an intelligent conversation with my service advisor.

    Thank you -

Not sure if this is helpful at all but I removed my heated steering wheel from my '19 P+ and installed a RS3 wheel. Just direct bolt on, I get a brief warning for "heated steering wheel malfunction" but that is it. I just got VCDS so was going to try and code that warning out

Thanks...Mine is a bit more than the physical wheel replacement, which appears to be fairly simple, assuming you can wrestle the airbag off. I also have to tackle feeding power to the heating element, which involves swapping the combi switch. My early research made it seem that replacing any of the column components (in this case, the switch) would involve recalibration if you have dynamic steering. Smac770 has confirmed.

Now, all I have left to do is identify the proper combi switch from the dozen or so permutations Audi has...

Thanks, but I already picked one up. You wouldn't happen to have a spare combi switch for that the heated wheel that also has the ALA button, would you? That would be huge...

If we look at the "combi switch" for the B9.0 A4/S4 sedan, we see 4M... units are used through MY18 and 4N... units are used starting MY19 (Jul '18 and on production). Looking at the 4N units, we see the 8 US market (AV2) variations were reduced from 8 to 4. In particular, we see the 6I0 (without active lane assist) hard associated with 8T2 (standard cruise control), and 6I1 (active lane assist) hard associated with 8T3 (adaptive cruise assist with stop & go). The heated version (1XP) then becomes 4N0 907 129 N. That's the specific unit you want, for MY19 sedan with AV2, 1XP, 6I1, 8T3. such as https://www.ebay.com/itm/275605550904

But it appears the latest MY22+ version set is the current R&R parts for any of the 8W years. So you could use 4N0 907 129 N, KD, or MJ for any year 8W sedan. Would even the older 4M0 907 129 GQ and LQ units work? No idea. I'd probably stick to 4N units since you're MY19+.

Long-delayed follow-up, now that fall is headed our way.

@SMacc - if I do the hardware swap over a weekend, I'm assuming I will be managing a collection of warning lights on the dash (probably pre-sense offline, and maybe steering warnings) until I can I get to the dealer for a recalibration. Should I worry about any issues with drivability?

    TIA

I can't say first hand, it's not a task I've personally performed with a B9 vehicle. I don't see why there would be any issues with being able to actually move the vehicle from A to B after the change. The dynamic steering column has a failsafe configuration for continued vehicle operation.

The leading task after will be the resetting of the steering angle sensor. I don't know if the B9, you can just do it by turning the wheel full stop right, wait for beep, full stop left, wait for beep, done. Or if you need to go and initiate such via basic settings.

I think there was a more extensive thread on the retrofit process in the B9 A5/S5 forum as well.

    @Smac770

Update: Managed to get the hardware installed last week. As anticipated, all sorts of systems went offline due to the missing steering angle data, but the car was drivable and the steering controls, including heating, were fully functional. Had the local dealership reset the steering angle sensor and dynamic steering today. After the initial configuration work, the tech was kind enough to come and indicate an airbag fault was "sticky" and would require letting ODIS overwrite a bunch of data, which might likely impact the active TPMS system configuration (which I installed earlier this year). When he was done, he warned me there were now TPMS faults and drivetrain faults he thought related to the retrofitted TPMS system being misconfigured.

I brought the car home, reconfigured the active TPMS to the settings used when I installed it (a few had indeed been overwritten), and managed to eliminate the TPMS issue - warnings stopped and the display again worked. That said, the following warnings remain at startup:

    - Speed control system: currently unavailable. See owner's manual

    - Start-stop sytem malfunction.

    - Drive system malfunction! Please contact service.

For good measure, I'll toss in the three screenshots the tech managed to capture during the session:

    Screenshot 3b.jpgScreenshot 2b.jpgScreenshot 1b.jpg

One note that may or may not be relevant: when going back in to clean up the retrofitted TPMS configuration, in the CAN Gateway (19), the option under Adaptation for activating Tire Pressure Monitor was no longer present. This was indeed present when I installed the system, and today I couldn't find it anywhere.

Any thoughts on where to start?

    TIA

Wonder what's up with the ConBox (J949). This is the device that does the connected vehicle services. It's not the "long coding" string that is in issue here, it's some other configuration setting somewhere that is off, possibly in some other module.

On the Direct TPMS (J502), "Dataset Number: xiaozhihui 0004"? These dataset number values seem to be a new thing in the scan. Lot of old scans don't have such, so it's hard to guess if that's a reasonable value.

I find it odd that the J453 multifunction steering wheel buttons unit ends up as a subdevice of the J533 rather than the J527, but seems that's how they do it now in B9.

So to the screenshots, the SVM reconfigured the 03-brakes (J104 ABS/ESP) coding, which is to be expected. The car came with indirect TPMS, and you would have coded that off when you installed direct TPMS. I'm not familiar with the step by step of retrofitting direct TPMS on a B9. But you should restep that complete process and see where changes were made in the coding of the J104. You'll need to redo that "deactivation". This may or may not be what the J623 (ECM) is going on about. It's unlikely the J623 cares anything about the J949.

Thanks for weighing in. I'm guessing the dataset detail has something to do with the shop that sold me the TPMS module. It was an eBay purchase from China after my initial module proved to be parameterized wrong.

I'll go deep again tonight and over the weekend and recheck the configuration. In the meantime, here is the configuration data I have captured since the start of the project. It shows what was changed and where, as well as the missing configuration option from yesterday.

    TPMS Configuration.JPG

The original configuration worked without a hitch, at least until yesterday when portions were overwritten. Currently, the system is back online and functioning, but with the errors mentioned above, which may or may not be related.

I don't know what that entry under J533 is meant to be. Maybe that's an OBDeleven specific task reference rather than an actual adaptation entry? When I look at the J533 adpmap for a B9.0 A4 someone posted using VCDS, and search on "tire", there's some stuff, but nothing specifically "tire pressure monitor - activate". Would need more accurate info regarding that entry to understand the mismatch.

The ABS settings are certainly going to create issue, so those need to be put back to direct TPMS config. Also, we see the J502 is "terminal 15" rather than "can extended". That'll have to be fixed.

But I'd wait and see what's what after the known wrongs are righted.

So, I've gone back and checked my work, compared long coding strings (historical vs. current) until my eyeballs bled. Things again match up from a before / after configuration perspective.

However, I'm now wondering if the new combination switch is recognized by the ECU as being an ACC / ALA unit, but the ACC features aren't activated in the gateway, because I didn't have them from the factory. Hence the power train error code P1647 00 [167] and what appear to be references to cruise control functionality:

    ACC variants-Bits 0-7: 0
    CCS Switch-Bits 0-7: 2
    Cruise control switch actuation-Bits 0-7: 0
    Cruise control switch actuation-Bits 0-7: 49
    ACC variants (coding)-Bits 0-7: 1

Following this idea, our Blessed Lady of Google turned up this nugget:

    https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...F&opi=89978449

I can get ALA working using a bit of VCDS voodoo with the current combi switch (which was my plan), but not ACC, as I don't have the camera.

    Thoughts?

The B9 is a cluster f of parameterization, and having a dozen different variants with different firmware. Which stalks/J527 unit p/n did you install?

    4N0 907 129 MJ is what I purchased.

Here is where I think this will land: can I somehow code out the ACC toggle or the ECU's ability to see it?

MJ (previously KD, previously N) is for a US sedan (AV2, K8B) with heated wheel (1XP), active lane assist (6I1), and adaptive cruise control (8T3), prior to MY22. The version of the same but with standard cruise control (8T2) is MH (previously KC, previously M). There's no reason to assume you can make the rest of the car think it's an MH rather than an MJ with any user accessible toggle. Why did Audi do all this mess of a different product version for every config? Did it save cost, or did they just want to make retrofits an annoyance for owners? Who knows.

Also, if you need the 6I0 one (without ALA), K8B+AV2+1XP+6I0+8T2 is rev MF, previously JS, previously K (as I think you mentioned you don't have the driver assistance camera).

Thank you...time to start researching stock availability.

Follow-on question: Does the presence of dynamic steering make a difference with the combi switch fitment? It seems to be a qualifier called out in the part descriptions.

No, I see no reference to "QZ7" (electro-mechanical power steeering) vs "1N8" (dynamic electro-mechanical power steering) as a factor. Note my edit above in case you don't need the ALA button.

Closing this out for future reference.

Installed a combi switch with just the ALA button (no ACC toggle on the cruise stalk), P/N 4N0 907 129 M, and had a local shop (not the dealer) reset the steering angle sensor and dynamic steering module.

All steering wheel controls are functional, as is the heating element. Equally important, all errors cleared and my cruise control is back online.

I haven't yet tried to configure the ALA button, but anticipate this should work.

Note it took the shop a grand total of ~20 minutes to reset the steering modules vs. the 2.0 hours my local dealer charged the first time around. The locals used a Snap-On unit for the service and didn't need any access to ODIS.

    YMMV
