    Straightening wheels

Hey guys I’m looking at a set of aftermarket aluminum (forged I think) wheels where one has dents from hitting something like a curb. Dent is not deep, but it’s on the bead. Does anyone know a ballpark cost to repair and is it a long term fix? Thanks

Nobody has had rim dents removed from wheels?

What were you expecting from us? Call a wheel repair shop.

Ive repaired wheels myself, literally a heat gun, a rubber mallet and some abrasives, and rattle canned them. Ive had wheels powder coated. Depends what you want and how bad the damage is.

I dont remember what either cost, but it doesnt matter anyway because it was like 10 years ago and not in Eagle, Colorado.

    Exactly this ^

Take pictures at multiple angles, and reach out to places in your area that advertise wheel straightening. Not all bends can be fixed, particularly on a forged wheel. Costs will vary all over the map I am sure, as will time to repair, if possible at all.

We talking TSW's or HRE's here...

At least post a picture and the size/ type of the wheel and damage if you want information.

Why is that for forged wheels?

Probably meant from the perspective that you cant "re-forge" the repair. It will remain a weak spot.

It can be repaired but it wont be the same

Ultimately true of any wheel straightening, but also, doing it to a forged wheel requires much more heat and some additional specialized tools. Many places just don’t have these in their arsenal.

Local wheel shop here is typically 120-140 a wheel to straighten

Thanks for the info. I was planning on getting my wheel straightened but from a safety standpoint it's best to find a replacement?

    Thanks guys-
I believe the wheels I'm considering are cast aluminum, not forged. I've never encountered this before. I reached out to one company that straightens, but I don't have a pics of the damage so they couldn't be too specific. The dents are on the inside of the rim, and the tire holds air. If I do get the repair done, I'll let you all know how it goes.

one reason possibly, after forged wheel is heated, it mechanical properties change. So you maybe able to fix it, but then if would fail completely.
