    Rock Chip Repair Before PPF?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi All,

Bought a 16k mile RS5 and the previous owner did not have any PPF installed. From my inspection, these are the largest rock chips on the car that I'm concerned about. The detail shop told me that applying PPF over these might show some bubbling since the paint is uneven. They can do some touch up but since my paint color has metal flake in it the touch up might make the dark spots worse.

Has anyone done paint touch up for Daytona Gray Pearl paint color? How'd that end up looking?
Would letting the detail shop touch this up with the factory paint from the dealer be enough or should I look at going to a body shop for repair? How much of a mark will show on the PPF?

Trying to level it out with touch up paint will look better than leaving it when the PPF is installed.

Well, I just went through this scenario but I have a Quantum Grey S5. That grey does not have metallic chips...
That said, I bought my S5 used and it had a few rock chips of varying sizes. I bought the touch up paint and after going through it all with the shop decided to close my eyes and dive in. The results were better than I anticipated. The biggest rock chip is still visible as you can pick up the depth from original paint to the touch up paint but from 5 feet back, its gone. The smaller ones I can't even find anymore. I attribute this to the skill of the shop (Chicago Auto Pros in Glenview, IL) and that the paint was an actual match which I wasn't even confident of.

All said, think it was totally worth it as now its protected and we made a best effort to correct it before sealing it up with the PPF. There was no bubblying of the paint BTW, its even. The only one that shows is the big one which is a depression, not a bubble. After seeing the process I would recommend moving forward but it might be worth your time to jump on Youtube and watch how some quality shops do touchup paint repairs. If the place you're talking to isn't skilled then what they are telling you probably is accurate.

    Hope this helps.

Which paint exactly did you end up buying? I've been staring at some chips in my Quantum S5 for a while now, but always been afraid the touch up job would look worse, than better. Thanks

Color N Drive for Audi Automotive Touch Up Paint - LX7B/5J - Quantum Grey. Got it through Amazon. Was trying to get the Audi branded paint through ECS but the wait was too long and I had this scheduled for too long to push it back any further. Honestly, the touch up paint which is Audi branded through ECS was what I would have gotten if not for the long lead time. Its cheaper too.

I had a couple of very minor chips when I took my car in for PPF/Ceramic. I previously purchased the Dr. Colorchip kit but never used it. I brought it with me and the installer(s) used it prior to putting the film on. I can’t tell where they used it. My chips were tiny, 1/16” or smaller.

Dr.color chip is amazing and will make those chips 99% hidden. Order the kit, you will be amazed.

I bought by 2022 RS5 used and it had some small rock chips. I didn’t want anymore rock chips so I just went ahead and got it wrapped without fixing any of the rock chips. I got it wrapped in Xpel Stealth PPF. Honestly, unless you know where to look, you can’t see them. Since my car color is Mythos Black, like all black paint, it shows all dust/dirt and crap, so it’s almost impossible to see the rock chips unless it’s been washed and you are trying to look for it.

Isn't that Stealth wrap more like a matte finish? I saw a black GT4 that had a wrap in Stealth and it looked amazing. So, if that is the same thing then yeah, you are effectively hiding the rock chips with that wrap.

Ok, let’s see if I finally figured out how to add some photos to a post. Not sure why the struggle was so real for me lol If this doesn’t work then check out the link above, not to mention there’s more pics/videos on Instagram.

I also got the entire car ceramic coated, including the wheels and calibers. I just have to hit it with a pressure washer once a week and wash it with soap once a month.

This is pretty much the best solution you have and I 100% advise this method. Their application is pretty easy to follow and should help mask those blemishes pretty well.

Another +1 from me too. I found it hard to level it, it takes probably 5-6 coats to build it up but some of the larger chips I've had but otherwise works really well.

I have to admit it looks good. I keep thinking matte is done but I still love it. I hear it’s hard to wash though, has it been?

The thought crossed my mind as well that the matte look was done, but the the shop where I had it done says the stealth wrap is one of their most popular. It’s been very easy to keep clean. It’s also self healing, so it won’t show any swirl marks. I did get it ceramic coated as well, so that helps with the ease of keeping it clean.
