    OEM 0A3 TDI 6th Gear

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Is anyone aware of the OEM Audi part number for this part?

JHM used to stock them, but no longer. My recollection was that it was a 0.56 gear ratio available in a European TDI of this vintage that also ran the 0A3 TDI gearbox.

    Thanks in advance

As that thread is about an 01E, does this apply to an 0A3?

Thanks for that thread. My understanding from reading it and others was that these are different gearboxes and thus the TDI 6th gear would be gearbox-specific.

Are you saying that the TDI 6th gear can be used in both the 01E and 0A3? I'm a little confused.

I should also mention that I already reached out to Scotty at Advanced Automotion to ask if he has any TDI 6th gears for the 0A3, and he noted that he has them for the 01E only.

When I reached out to JHM (who previously stocked the imported TDI 6th gear for the 0A3), they unfortunately have no record of the part number.

Then I must be mistaken, thought the 6th gear ratio transferred over regardless of the tranny as the shafts was the same size.

Haven't looked into it for a long time and when I found it again I just wanted the ratio and teeth numbers as when I last was looking years ago all was discontinued.

There is a thread in the how-to section IIRC.

Here is the DIY, thought it had the part numbers but it was a JHM kit.

Probably won't help, but I bought my .53 6th gear from Scotty (80 mph=2200revs vs 3200 with stock .78 6th). That was 12 years ago. Helps a lot with 93 octane.

    @QIKRNU

Very cool, thanks. Definitely helpful. What rough mpg figures did you get on the highway, and was it in an S4 or RS4?

Do you know if the 0.53 6th was from an 01E or an 0A3 transmission? It seems like per @CrickiKaze that it might not matter, but I'm trying to clarify before I pull the trigger on one. Scotty has 0.56 for the 01E in stock, but I don't want to buy it only to find that its incompatible with the 0A3 trans in my RS4.

    Thanks all

Not sure who sells them anymore, I've been searching but haven't found anything

This is where I came across the info

It's a 2004 S4 Avant. 25 mpg is possible on the highway, but only if you keep your foot out of it. OA3 gearbox. I don't think the 'boxes are the same.

Correct. Just need find out where these are available for purchase. Jhm use to have it listing for the gear. The only other place that used to stock them was advanced automotion but their website has been down for quite some time. I believe they had two gear sets to choose from. .56 &.53

Tearing down a good tranny is the only way to get the gears due to them being discontinued, unless you find a set that someone has laying around.

I know some people that can get the gears. One of the gears is NLA thru Audi. They are not cheap though because the main shops have stopped selling them. Pretty sure that they gears cost me $750.

Yes because they are both 0A3 cases. I have installed them on RS4s but the RS4s lack the low end torque to be enjoyable below 75-80 mph in my opinion.

It is hard to find a whole transmission that can be shipped to the USA. Along with most people don't have the special tools required to do the work.

Just an FYI, this is the RPMs before and after.

I can tell you on this drive, I could not make it (342 miles) driving at a steady 8ish MPH over whatever posted limit is there... And then after the gear install, that same drive, under same conditions and inputs results in me making the entire drive and then still having enough gas leftover for a day or two of additional driving around town at either destination. Well worth it.

It's been a while since I've taken the RS4 on a substantial drive, but I think I last calculated a full tank around 25.5mpg over a mostly highway trip, which is noticeable increase from my SLC to Vancouver BC trip which I recorded (manually, not onboard computer) 20.8mpg.
