Broke a bolt on crankshaft pulley (harmonic balancer). 1.8. Can I run with 3 or do I spend the next week trying to get it out.

    Never tried. Let us know.

I don't really want to go into broken bolt extraction, helicoils, or timecerts.

If the head of the bolt broke clean off then the threaded rod should not have any pressure holding it in. If you get an easy out kit, it should pop out without much trouble.

Fuck that run 2 and call is weight reduction. Those silly engine engineers don't always know whats best. I think running 3 isnt gonna hurt it. To get it out best bet is to weld a nut to the top of the bolt or drill through the center and use a easy out.

I wasn’t aware that the 1.8 had harmonic balancer bolts, unlike the 2.0 TFSi it only has the 24mm crank bolt holding on the pulley.. if the bolt broke off clean you should be able to slip off the pulley then you should have enough exposed bolt to unscrew it out.. if the pulley is threaded then it’s not so easy.. I’d try LH drill bit, in the crank area there shouldn’t be corrosion so maybe you can LH drill and maybe the stud will start spinning? Good luck

Update on bolts. So I bought a cheap Harbor Freight bolt extractor set for $10. I didnt have much confidence at all in it working since I used heavy duty Locktite. It took effort to remove the other 3 after leaving it on all night.

Anyway the left handed drill bits backed it out after about 5 minutes of use. Totally shocked. Best $10 ever spent in my life.

Now I discovered these bolts arent in Audi parts diagram so I will hit up the U Pull Its this weekend.

    Thanks for the advice guys.

I'm glad you got the bolt out. It's nice when the fix is easy.

The front pulley bolts are torque to yield and should be replaced every time they are removed. A number of people have had issues with them since there is there is not a lot of design margin. I have seen a number of failures from people under torquing and or reusing fasteners. While you might get away with it losing the front pulley over $10 in bolts is not worth it. As a reference, on the B7 TFSI engine (2.0 liter, belt driven cam) the factory upgraded the front pulley to a six bolt design to account for the harsher combustion pulse of the GDI system.
