Oil Temperature and Pressure monitoring - B8.5

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Is there a way to actively monitor oil temp and pressure without installing additional gauges on the B8.5?

If not, does anyone have any gauge suggestions? I’ve seen a few nice ones but none are dual - they are either temp or pressure. Need to double check to see if I can get the p3 gauge to read oil!

you not only need a gauge . you need a sender also .. Audi just use switches that output based on thresholds set into the switches, it is essentially a go/no go gauge.

the 8.5 uses two switches that monitor pressures and a solenoid to switch between low and high pressure mode. You would likely have to "y" in a switch or try and find another port to monitor that will give you the readings you are looking for.

You can activate the Lap timer in the DIS, which includes oil temp.

The car has no oil pressure numerical measurement. It only has two on/off switches that activate so long as the pressure is above a hard set point. That way it knows if the oil pressure is at least above minimum to run the engine, and above minimum expected in high pressure mode (high rpms, etc).

I'm adding oil temp and oil pressure gauges to my build. I bought ProSport Evo series in red to match the interior OE layout.

Thank you all for the info! I figured it wouldn’t be easy! :). I’ll see if I can get that lap timer/oil temp readout working!

Cool! I was looking at that pro sport as well! Was on the fence between the red or white. Also trying to find a good spot for it. Are you doing two gages? Was hoping to find a dual readout option. The one I did find - I was not a fan of the looks.

Is this the one you're referring to?: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-innovate...e/inn3913~ino/

If so, I agree with you. The look is a big thing for me and it doesn't fit the B8 theme, unfortunately. If the LED readout could be red, I might have done it. Lol

If you want any pics on the ProSports, I have them in my possession (I'm traveling currently, but I have them in my garage). I plan on installing them in a dual gauge pod that mounts from the driver's side defrost vent. I was the first to get it (3 years ago now...).

Yup! That’s the dual one I saw - I also prefer a more “factory” look.

I think I saw the mount you were talking about too. That would be a great solution for two more gauges. My only concern there would be the gauges cooking in the sun (I don’t have a garage) and it’s not very discrete. :). I also saw a couple of steering column mount possibilities.

Thanks for the info! And welcome back! Looking forward to your progress on your build!

I've built many cars with gauges and the cars left in all types of sun/weather. Is it degrading the life of the gauge? /shrug? Lol. I haven't heard of a failure or know of one first hand due to that! Lol. My car doesn't get to see a garage either.

Thanks! I haven't been away but haven't posted much. I know you all love to see this stuff; I don't want to hold out! ;)

This may be a stupid question..I've never looked at the wiring...Is there an oil temp circuit built into the oil level sensor?

Good to know! I’ve had bad luck in the past with led’s and backlight displays in the sun/heat. Might have to take a chance on this one.

Here’s the vent pod set I came across. Is this the one you prototyped?

I actually like the double mount better than the single version!

Yes, the G266 sensor mounted to the bottom of the oil pan computes both the oil temp and the oil level.

Oil Temperature and Pressure monitoring - B8.5

Probably going to pull the trigger on this setup.

Wondering if I can assemble or find a T fitting to plug both temp and pressure senders into the banjo bolt at the turbo oil feed?

Once you have the port, you can T fit it with whatever from there. But the car already does oil temp.

…also came across an oil drain plug that accepts a temp sender. Don’t know it the bottom of the oil pan would be the best reading.

…then there is something like this:
    https://www.maperformance.com/produc...sopot-m20xp1-5

That would be so simple but I wonder if I would then need to cut a hole in the hood to make it fit. :).

? The car already has an oil temp sensor on the oil pan. Why add another? Can the monitor tool not query the measuring values via the OBD-II port?

So I have everything on order. Got the pro sport oil temp and pressure gauges and will mount them into the dual defrost vent gauge cups.

For the connection, I realized the filter sandwich plate and the banjo connection will not work on my car (B8.5).

    I plan on using this:
    https://www.atpturbo.com/mm5/merchan...&Store_Code=tp

    And this:
    https://www.anhosefittings.com/an-ma...r-port-04.html

Along with a braided hose that connects to the turbo oil in.

I realize the temp sensor will be redundant. I can use the obd to log oil temp - but I would like a constant readout. I’m not a fan of the temp/lap timer display.

I also like that this setup will give me readings without having to pass through the ECU. The reading will also be just before the turbo so it will be interesting to see how (if) they differ from where the car normally reads these values (oil sump and oil filter?)

…and finally - two more gauges on my dash will put a smile on my face every time I enter the cockpit! :)

Thank you All! I’ll report back once I get everything sorted!

Interesting find on the 4AN adapter for the block connection. Places talk about replacing that flex hose supply line that can get clogged with cooked oil, but the OE line is stupid expensive. The modification might make a nicer long term solution in that regard as well (unless 4AN lines aren't cheap either). What did you go with for a 4AN to banjo adapter?

I'm with you on the lap timer. I don't want to have to constantly click through to get that. I want it in front of my face lol.

Great finds on those items and I'm going to copy your work - thanks! :)

Curious, where are you getting an AN line and then an adapter for the turbo side?

I’m getting most of the fittings from the atp turbo site I linked earlier. I actually have a lot of these bits already as I have been working on getting a 6758 EFR turbo to fit. All the connection sizes are the same as the stock turbo.

I have couple “premade” 18” 4an lines. One has a 12mm banjo attachment on one end. I’ll take a couple pics once I get a chance. The one thing you have to careful about with these fittings is some of them have restrictors. You don’t want to fit anything that will starve the turbo of oil - or let too much in.

I’ll post detailed pics once I get a chance!

That is interesting about the cooked oil. Probably more a symptom of poor maintenance than a bad supply line. The OE line seems pretty sturdy and it look like it is slightly larger than 4an size.

And yes - very pricey. I’ve found all of my replacement (and experimentation) lines on eBay very cheap. They’re usually in pretty good condition too. I trust the used OE more than the off brand “budget” reproductions.

Explained the banjo adapter above. The lines aren’t too expensive and you can build them yourself if you need custom.

I have all the fittings I should need to make the connections.

In the pic are the stock turbo oil feed and two options that I could put together.
Either would work - I’m not sure if one flows better than the other, but when I fit the EFR turbo, I will definitely use the screw in AN adapter over the banjo attachment.

For the sender hookups - I am a bit worried about clearance - will need to get under the car to be sure.

Hopefully the weather will warm up a bit so I can get outside and under the car! In the mean time, I can plan out the electrical…

Very nice! Where did you get the adapter for the turbo side and the AN hose?

It says it’s for an efr but the thread size is the same… 12mm and it fits 4an connection.

…I got the gauges and electrical installed. Once I got everything figured out,
It wasn’t too bad. I ended up using live open fuse slots to tap into the acc and constant power feeds. Ground connection was made to a grounded bolt near the fuse panel. I tapped into the power wire to the driver-side vent to get the headlight/dim function to work.

    IMG_0040.jpg
    IMG_0046.jpg

Also got under the car and confirmed there was enough room for the adapter and senders:
    IMG_0051.jpg

The wiring back to the cabin will be a pain. I plan to create a harness and go back through the ECU box.

    Happy with how gauges look…

Hey SNice, thinking this through, would the location at the oil filter adapter be the more accurate place to check oil pressure over a few channels into the circuit?

In addition, the location for the turbo oil feed is right around the engine, manifold and turbo; a really hot flipping area for wiring, sensors, etc.

    Thoughts?

I think it might be. That area was my original preferred “easy” option. I figured I could just find an oil filter sandwich adapter with two taps for the sensors. I wasn’t able to find anything that fit…but now I’m thinking that the threaded portion of our oil filters may be removable. If that is the case, I could probably get one of those sandwich adapters to fit. I have an oil change coming up soon so will check on the old filter. As long as the sandwich adapter doesn’t raise the oil filter too high (possible hood closure interference), it should work!

In any event, if I can’t find an oil filter adapter, I have heat shield covering and plan to route the wiring down and over. I will steer clear of anything that gets too hot.

I also wondered if I could tap the signal wires from existing sensors but learning that they are “switch” style made me think that might not work. In this case, redundancy may be good.

SNice is adding a T at the turbo oil inlet. There is a different aftermarket option to add the sensor at the stock sensor location:

My problem with that is, what to do with the stock sensor? short to the ground?

I understand what he's doing. I explained the concers I have which are a tad valid. I'm looking at either an oil filter sandwich or I've found some nice aftermarket oil cooler replacements where it gives you AN fittings to run an external oil cooler.

I am using a pro sport gauge - just a different model of the one you linked. The one I have allows you to change display color from red, blue, green, white. It also has some memory and alarm functions. I ordered directly from pro sport. It’s the premium evo series (or something like that).

The gauges come with the sender (sensor) you just need to figure out where to tie it into your system.

I didn’t really want to mess with the stock sensor because it is tied into ECU functions. I was going to tap the signal wire but was unsure of the signal because the stock pressure sensor is apparently of the switching type (others informed me of this earlier in the thread).

I got my install completed. Everything worked out really well. I’m not so concerned about the components being destroyed by heat as they are pretty low and they are near a stock wiring harness. I did protect the wires with sheathing and heat shrink tubing. I’ll keep an eye on it but not too worried at this point. I routed all wiring along stock wiring. My wires come up behind the air box, through the firewall (passenger side); through the ECU box and into the cabin for the connection to the gauges.

Yeah! Funny they all look brighter in the pic than in real life! But I never tapped the p3 gauge into the headlight switch so I usually just manually dim it at night.

I'm getting close to buttoning up the engine build and I'm back on this topic. I'm thinking of teeing off of the F22 and F378; put the pressure with the F22 and the temp with F378.

Anyone know the thread pitch offhand for these sensors? Its Close to a NF 3/8-24. My 3/8-24 thread chaser is loose, but the pitch seems to be accurate. 1/8 NPT is close but it isnt it. Starts to thread and then halts hard; so I know thats not it.
