    Advice as to Wife's Q7

    Hey guys (and Gals),

My wife's 2017 Q7 was in the indy for an oil change today. We're taking it on a long trip later this month, so I wanted it check as I'm very busy with work. Oil change $100, compared to dealer at about $150. So, that's fair. These guys typically error on the side of doing less unless something expensive will result from ignoring an issue. They show the water pump is leaking coolant, which i suspected given smell after a longer drive and having to dump coolant into it twice during the last OCI. So, the offer to replace it and flush is about $1K out the door. They've never done me wrong and I don't have time to source the part, get a pressure fluid burping system. We'll put 4K miles on the car before April 1. I cant imagine ignoring this issue and would rather spend my time at work - earning money to pay for the repair - and spare time doing a simple "two stage paint correction with 2 coats of sealant JessCar Plus and one coat of colinite 845.

    Thoughts, comments?

Car is 2017 Q7 3.0 stage 1. 82K miles. No repairs. Average oil change interval 8k. Differentials and T case oils change last year. Plugs and filters at 60K with SC belts and APR stage 1. New tires last year. Car seems a keeper... Again, thoughts appreciated.

Moreover, I plan to leave it with Valpo a some point for PCV and T-Stat----- just kidding buddy! I'll bite that bullet when she's out of town and do SC oil too! I just need a week at have parts all over the garage!

That quote sounds fair. Have them replace thermostat and oil separator/pcv at same time and you’ll be out of pocket under $1,500

Seems a little high but not terrible. Water pump is easy to replace on these cars. You don’t have to touch the charger so figure 2 hours labor MAX. $300 for genuine Audi part plus a gallon of coolant.

Water pump, t-stat, seals, and coolant kit from FCP is 300 shipped. You can get a vac fill off Amazon for under $40 that will do the job. Not sure how much time is the book answer for this repair but if like you said timing of the repair is the issue. For an indie it might be a bit high on labor but the peace of mind…..

I'd pay that if I was in your situation. Figure 500 or so on parts and a few hours labor at today's rates, that quote sounds right to me.

They had a recall on these water pumps since Audi used a plastic housing that would crack. The wifes 2017 Q7 water pump failed at 51k right after the warranty ran out and our local deal fixed it for free. worth a call to AOA and see if they can help with the cost.

Will do!!!! Eleven of APA paid half, that would be great. I used to BMW where I’d replace water pump at 60k miles because it will fail!!!!

Thanks for the comments guys. I was too busy this week with work and family life (prefer to keep job and family), so I paid to have the job done. Steamed the motor once it got home. Looks nearly new under the hood. That said, we also had a rock hit the window, with the result being a large crack. Called insurance and "luckily" it was scheduled for replacement this morning. Well, the window is replaced, but it's not "factory/OEM with Audi logo". The manager at the nationally known glass shop said he had seen this repair before on this car and the "pre-sense" isn't working correctly. He's already contacted my insurance company, ordered a factory Audi branded windshield and should have it before we hit the road for spring break. NO COMPLAINTS here. Shit happens. And, I'll note, cars are becoming so complicated. It seems we're introducing computers into everything and - sometimes - it's simply not needed. That said, fuel injection and ABS, for example, are fantastic developments. I'd assume things like "pre-sense", "HUD", "Lane Assist", etc.. will evolve, perfect and make us all safer. But, I'd bet that window from will Audi cost twice the "generic" and it shouldn't.... Insurance is paying, but I'll ultimately pay via higher rates down the road.

All that said, if you have a windshield replacement, make darn certain everything works perfectly!!

As to the AOA extended warranty on Waterpump, I'm SOL. They're prorated to 8 years and 80K, whichever is first and we had 82K. Flat denied. If we had 79K, we'd have received 5% of the replacement cost. I'm going to take a darned good look at my 5 year 5K A6. If that pump is suspect in any way, I'll get Audi to replace Pump, T-Stat, connections and PCV if possible. I may pay half, but it should be good to 100k plus!!

These cars are not Toyota or Honda reliable, but they're better in regard to maintenance to other Germans that I've had and they're a pleasure to own, even if you have to bust a knuckle or write a check now and again...
