Glovebox rant! Ha ha, the worst $500 design.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So far this is the only thing I absolutely hate about the car, otherwise I love everything about it. This is my second glovebox since I took ownership of the vehicle. The first one went pretty fast shortly after I took her off the new car showroom. The hinge on the right side had broken off a flawless otherwise brand new-looking glovebox. So new that luckily it was still under warranty at the time and Audi replaced it. Now it has finally happened again with the same problem. A $500, no wait... a $600 design flaw. One would think shortly after, or even by now the minions at Audi would of revised this 'integral' part option. But no. Would anyone want to throw away another $500-$600 again?? Yes there are mickey-mouse fixes out there but no glovebox should cost this much, shouldn't even be remotely close to the amount!

Agree, its ridiculous. Mine was broke when i got the car. Luckily, I got a used one(just the door), in good shape, for like $80. Now I'm super careful when using it.

Not talking about 'now', but could of done years earlier knowing that the problem persists. They still manufacture them, right? So why not tweak it while they're at it? And still retails for over $500 and probably not selling any, so where's your basic economics??? And yes some manufacturers still do make revisions to certain parts for certain 'older' cars.

Best to remove that plunger thingy that makes it operate slow/smooth. It's too stiff and creates too much resistance on a poorly designed hinge assembly. As another poster mentioned there are repair kits available. The bullet proof solution: repair it then lock the glovebox and call it done. :)

I read about the problem and drilled a small hole in the damper. Works fine and has not broken.

You don't want to to fall too fast and break the hinge when it bottoms out. Most of the broken ones I have seen including my first glovebox were issues with the dampener losing all rebound and opening too quickly and breaking the hinge.

My new box I took apart and serviced the dampener, oiled the plunger so it slides smoothly but still with some resistance. Your drilled one will soon also get faster as it dries out, so you want to make sure to always lower the door to the bottom position with your hand.

I think I have the only b6/7 with a functional, working OE glove box. My trick? Stick the owners manual under the drivers knee panel where it goes and gently lower the glove box/don't fill it crap.

My current glovebox is OE, and I'll one up ya; get a Euro knee bolster so you can also put your shit there, next to your manual.

I just purchased an 2006 a4 quattro and the glove box just falls off when you try to open it. Is there a cheaper way to repair it or should I just lock it closed and not use it lol?

    Necro-thread-post.

Has anyone tried the replacement doors on Amazon/eBay? Fixed my son's with the metal brackets, but thinking of new for my newly acquired 2006 S-Line Avant. $50ish seems worth a try.

When mine breaks I plan on getting it from the Pick N Pull 30 minutes from my house. They've always got a few B6/7 A4s there, and the part pricing says $35 for the glove box door with the locking mechanism. Of course I'd take the entire glove box assembly, but either way it's cheap

This...the first thing I did when looking a my Avant with the PO was sit down on the passenger side and open the glove box...to which they said it has been broken since before they owned it. Not the end of the world, but my son's B6 was the only A4 which I have seen without a busted hinge. As the OP posted, worst design ever, and not fixed between the B6 and B7 models.

Yup. I bought a replacement door on here for like $80, and take it super easy with it.
