Where do you store your Jack?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Still getting acquainted to my new S5 Sportback. When I picked up the car I noticed the Jack was in a pouch in the trunk and tied down to the hard points. I asked the salesman what was the proper storage place for it and he said that’s it and that in Europe the cars come with a deflated space saver and the Jack is kept in the spare tire well. Because of the USA inflated spare and subwoofer there’s no place “below deck” for the Jack. I wrapped it in an old yoga mat and stuck it behind the trunk recessed storage cubby on the passenger side. It fits well but still makes a clunk over big bumps (MD and DC roads suck). Any suggestions for alternative storage spots would be appreciated.

There was a storage space for the jack under the trunk floor. However, when Audi changed the telecommunication system, the new control box took the place of the jack storage. There’s a thread either on these forums or AW where people have have found a foam tray that can be used to store the jack.

I too am adjusting to a new S5 Sportback and was somewhat disappointed with the lack of storage space. That's not only for the jack, but the glove box and center bin between the front seats are substantially smaller than the those on our 2011 S4. On the other hand, the overall cubic feet of storage space in the trunk and when the rear seats are folded forward is huge. The bag for our jack was also attached to a D-ring in the trunk. There was no way it is going to fit in the spare tire well. My solution to this was to use a small trunk organizer, similar to this one, which I've also used to store a couple of small folding umbrellas, a roll of paper towels, some folded plastic sheeting, disposable rubber gloves and slip-on shoe covers in case I have to get dirty (changing tires which hopefully won't happen, and other such tasks). It just occurred to me that makes me sound like "Dexter" LOL!

One thing that I noticed, and it may affect others who just got a 2023 S5, is that the tool bag only contained the jack, the crank handle for the jack, and that was it. There was no lug wrench to remove the wheel bolts, and the small plastic tool to remove the plastic lug bolt caps was also missing. I didn't order the OEM wheel lock option so perhaps it got missed by whoever put the tool bag in the trunk. I placed a better quality breaker bar and a 17mm plastic jacketed socket wrench into the cloth tool bag. Last comment was that the nylon straps sewn to the cloth tool bag were oddly attached IMO. There was also a spring-loaded carabiner attached to the bag which would make attaching the bag to one of the trunk floor D-rings fast and easy.

Aside from that, we love the car! Still in the break-in period -- only 300 miles on it so far, so anxious to get the remaining break-in miles on soon.

Did your car come with the plastic tray located in the other compartment forward of the spare? That’s where my misc. items are located separate from the tool bag.

If anyone can dig up that foam tray it would be appreciated!

Either I’m inept at searching AW/AZ or the search capabilities have not improved in the 10 years I’ve been absent from the sites.

I recall seeing that linked thread before. Unfortunately, I do not have that plastic tray -- and don't see another compartment forward of the spare's compartment (illustrated as #1 in Fig 176 of the owner's manual on page 279). That illustration's description says "Applies to: Coupe/Sportback: To open the front compartment, lift the cargo floor by the strap (1)." That "cargo floor" appears to be located forward of the trunks D-ring tie downs that are located nearest to the rear setbacks.

I considered loosening the fastening ring holding the spare tire/wheel in place as shown in the thread lined above, and sliding the spare towards the passenger side but that didn't seem like a viable solution to the jack bag storage problem. But now I have an additional concern! In addition to the missing wheel wrench (Fig. 181) and the wheel hex socket (Fig., 184) that was supposed to have been in the vehicle tool kit, I also haven't found the wheel alignment pin that's used for aligning the wheel when installing a wheel during a change (see Fig. 185). And as if that's not enough, I also cannot locate the "Rear Towing Loop" that is used for towing from the rear bumper (Fig. 188 on page 288 of the manual). I don't see any reference to using the towing loop device to the front bumper?

Finally, that red plastic 90 degree-shaped tool (the "Parking Lock Emergency Release" Fig. 105 on page 109) that's supposed to be used for "Resetting the parking lock". Even the screwdriver shown in Fig.104 page 109 to remove the cover in the front cup holder is missing from the vehicle tool kit. Am I the only one who can't find any of these tools?

I will mention that when I first got the car home and put on my winter wheels, I noticed I was missing the plastic tool for pulling the plastic lug covers off the lug bolts. I was able to get the covers off with some difficulty but the next time I was in the dealers area I stopped in and they were happy to get one of those U-shaped removal tools (Fig. 180 on page 282). At that point in time, I wasn't aware of all the other missing tool kit items. I'm going to have to take another look in the trunk and see if all the missing tools are there somewhere.

To summarize, those missing items include:
Wheel Wrench (Fig. 181 pg 282)
Wheel Hex Socket (Fig. 184 pg 284)
Wheel Alignment Pin (Fig. 185 pg 284)
Rear Towing Loop (Fig. 188 pg 288)
Parking Lock Emergency Release (Fig. 105 pg 109)
Screwdriver for Emergency Release (Fig. 104 pg 109)

Apparently, the vehicle tool kit also includes the following items I cannot locate, from the Fuses and bulbs replacement page ...
Screwdriver and reversible Torx bit (Figure 190 pg 290). This might be the same screwdriver used for the Emergency Parking Lock Release.

I'll be back after searching the inventory!

Hey I'm back and have good news! That cargo mat #1 does lift up to reveal the plastic tray with an assortment of tools. Instead of flipping up towards the front of the car, it actually opens towards the rear of the car. There's a tiny little pull tab at the front of the panel that I couldn't get a grip on, but after folding the rear seats down, I was able to lift the edge of the panel and open it to reveal the plastic tray. Here's what I found in the vinyl tool kit in that tray:
    Wheel Wrench
Wheel Hex Socket *This is actually on one end of the screwdriver handle
    Wheel Alignment Pin
    Rear Towing Loop
    Parking Lock Emergency Release
Screwdriver for Emergency Release which also has the reversible Torx bit.

So all the tools I thought I was missing are there. There is an unused slot in the plastic tray, but I'm doubtful about the floor jack fitting into it. I might just store my breaker bar and 17mm socket in that tray though since I hope not to be using them anytime soon. Hope that helps!

All those tools are in the plastic tray storage compartment in front of the spare tire. Have you removed the trunk floor panel from the car? The B9.5 cars no longer have a tow hook attachment point in the front bumper.

Thanks John! It really wasn't obvious that the forward panel was there, and that it opened towards the rear of the car until I folded the rear seats down. I haven't had the car long enough to recognize there's no tow hook attachment in the front bumper -- good to know!

    I was thinking something similar.

Regarding me, I have an RS5 SB. The rear pan on the RS5 SB seems to be different due to the sport differential and previously mentioned phonebox on the facelifted B9.5

I keep mine strapped down in the trunk. It doesn't bother me... much.

Hmmm, my S5 Sportback has a sport diff but that under carpet storage space (more like injection molded vs foam tray) is right there behind the rear seats, but is essentially invisible unless you see the small tab in the center of the carpet's forward edge where you can pull up the edge to expose the tray. I'm wondering if that plastic tool tray's longest slot can be modified a bit to fit the jack into it.

    Now where's that Jim?

See the pic in post #6 above. The jack does indeed fit in the well along with the spare tire. That’s where I put mine as well.

Nice Adam's detail spray! I'm never without.

What cargo mat did you get for your SB? I can't find one on Audi's site for the RS5 anymore. Only the cargo net.

Audi doesn't make one that's appropriate for the S5/RS5. They're all labeled "A5." Mine is a custom-badged weathertech.

My goal is to get that jack into the spare tire well. I can take my breaker bar and 17mm socket and put it into the plastic tray, and I think that the crank handle for the jack, which is currently in the cloth jack bag, will also fit into the plastic tray. That would leave just the jack to get into the spare tire well. The question is will it fit into the well without first having to loosen the knurled plastic hold-down ring for keeping the spare tire centered in the well. If moving the spare over to the passenger side a little will make the jack fit in there, I'll probably do that.

Evening update! So I took the jack handle out of the cloth bag, leaving only the jack itself in the bag. In the plastic tray for the tools, I placed the aforementioned jack handle, my breaker bar, 17MM socket, a steel wheel hanger tool, and a bag of 5 correct length ball seat bolts in case I ever need to mount the spare. (I have spacers on my winter wheels so can't use the longer than standard length wheel bolts on the spare.)

Next I got into the spare tire well and loosened the hold down nut and moved the spare over to the right about an inch. It appeared there might be enough space to wedge the jack bag into the gap between the tire and the edge of the well, but I decided against doing that. There were a couple of wiring harnesses directly below where I considered placing the jack bag. I felt the risk of the jack potentially moving or abrading or otherwise damaging a wiring harness wasn't worth it. I'll simply keep it in a small cargo bag I keep in the trunk.

I removed the old OEM subwoofer, after adding a Basser subwoofer enclosure & Kicker amplifier. This space was used to build a mount for my tire jack and torque wrench in the OEM B&O subwoofer location. A 3/8” thick Neoprene Sponge Foam Rubber surrounds the jack. Both the jack and torque wrench are strapped down. It is mounted on 18.5” x 8.5”x 1/2” plywood & a 18.5” long 2x4 tall side mounted vertical, which the spare tire rests on.

Base for mounting jack & torque wrench:

Nicely done! Looks like you put a lot of thought into creating that solution -- it's what the Audi engineers should have designed, but didn't.
