    Headlights not working correctly

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I purchased this car from auction. We already replaced the starter, engine mounts, springs, and wheels that were all damaged. The amp was keeping the mmi from coming up so I have it temporarily looped until I can get this one repaired. I'm currently trying to figure out the light issues. the drivers low beam works but not the high. passenger low and high are both out but the side marker works. Both drls do not work. One fog light works on the driver's side and one reverse light. When I swapped the headlights, they stayed the same. any ideas where I should start with getting them to work correctly? Here's the log from VCDS:

No communication to either the J530 HomeLink transmitter by the J519 central electrics, nor to the E284 HomeLink controls by the J393 central convenience. Do you actually have HomeLink controls in the interior overhead unit? They are powered by the same fuse, driver's end of dash, black column, fuse 3. Have you validated every fuse in the car? Ends of dash, black column are term 15 (ignition on), brown column and red column are term 30 (always on), except the top 4 brown on the driver's end, those are engine managed.

G395, refrigerant pressure sensor on the radiator left end. Could be the sensor, not uncommon, could be the wiring back to the J519, known to develop corruption such there's a TSB for it.

H12, could be the unit. Could be no power to it (another fuse in the driver's end of the dash). Could be grounding. Could be LIN line to it from the J393. It's only got 3 wires to it.

J519 term 30, again, fuses, driver's end of dash. Or the wiring from it to the J519. Or the J519 is just trash.

As for the tail lights and head lights, just too much unverified wiring integrity. What headlamps do you have? Halogen or HID (bi-xenon)? Halogen have 10-pin plug. HID have 14-pin plug. Fog light, this the front fog lights or the rear fog lights.

Thank you for the reply. I do have home link in the overhead console. It’s honestly the least of my worries.

I believe we have been through each and every fuse visually and with test lamp. I should have stated this earlier.

As for the headlights, they are bi-xenon. Fog lights are the front. I was leaning towards the J519 being the issue here due to the shear number of issues coming from its components. I’ve visually inspected quite a bit of the wire and it looks to be in good shape but my next step was continuity.

Yeah, J519 might not be in the best of sorts.

Left headlamp. You say the HID bulb comes on for low beam, but goes off for high beam? Because the bulb is on the same for both, high beam just moves a shutter to focus the light beam higher down the road. youtu.be/3ar9bGLYLmI

You swapped the HID bulbs, but did you swap the HID ballasts? The J519 sends power to the HID ballast to power the HID bulb. Could be wiring inside the headlamps as well. Or wiring from the J519 to the headlamps.

You should measure 12v from pin 16 (term 30) to pin 17 (ground) on the brown and red 17 pin harness plugs.
You should also measure 12v from pin 15 and pin 16 on the black 17 pin harness plug to either pin 17 (ground) on the brown or red plugs.
16 on the brown plug probably powers the left headlamp
16 on the red plug probably powers the right headlamp
15 on the black plug is probably general J519 operations
16 on the black plug is probably the windshield wiper motor
17 on the black plug is not a ground

6-pin green plug is heated seats stuff; 12v from fuse on pin 3, lines to the seats on pin 1 and 6.

Communications is on the 16-pin plug, CAN bus on 14/15, which seems to be fine since VCDS can talk to it. LIN bus 1 to the wiper motor is on pin 2, LIN bus 2 to the J530 and G395 and such is on pin 4. If the J530 is there in its bracket on the backside of the radiator, pull the plug and check for 12v from pin 4 to pin 3, and check for continuity from pin 2 to the pin 4 on the J519 16-pin. For the G395 on the radiator, 12v from pin 3 to pin 1, and pin 2 is the LIN bus pin, same as the J530's (so you could test for J530 pin 2 to G395 pin 2, etc).

Should also find 12v on pin 16 of the T32B plug (black), but only with ignition on; it's "term 15".

left front fog light runs off 17-pin brown, pin 8. right front fog light runs off 17-pin red, pin 8.

Thank you! I’ll begin checking the wiring and go from there. I didn’t just switch the HID from side to side I swapped the whole headlight assembly. When swapped they stayed the same, left just had low beams and right just had marker no matter which light was plugged in. I may be incorrect but I figured this was the best sure fire way to rule out all components of a single headlight assembly at once.
