Has anybody replace the steering u joint that’s in the steering column? I think mines got play literally the only thing left I haven’t replaced. Curious if anybody else has come across it as a problem

I haven't personally ever heard of anyone having to replace that. What exactly is the issue? Slop in the steering wheel?

And what all have you replaced? Inner tie rods (the ones attached inside the steering rack boots that have the ball joints) are always a good place to start if you haven't touched those yet.

Kinda like a floaty vague disconnected feeling, sort of feels like one side has more play than the other when turning the wheel. New inners and outer tie rods new rack new lower control arms new upper control arms new shocks and alignment the rack bolts aren’t loose. It used to feel good like a go cart then my rack went bad and I’ve been chasing it ever since. If I shake the wheel back and forth u can sort of tell but without another s4 to try out its kinda hard.

Interesting old thread. I have the dashboard out of my avant build for restoration currently and went and had a look at that joint. This particular one has 183k miles on it and the u-joint is tight as can possibly be. No play whatsoever. Any turning in the column at all moves the joint without any spare movement.

So I guess you can check yours the same way. It's so far back under the dash I'm not even sure if the knee bolster would need to come off. Just unlock the steering wheel with key and turn it tiny amounts and see if that joint wiggles with any looseness before moving the lower section.
