Car alarm going off daily - potentially due to aftermarket remote start

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey everyone, I installed a 12 volt solutions remote start kit in my car last winter and it worked flawlessly, however this winter its been nothing but a pain in the ass. For the past few months leading up to the winter my car alarm would go off maybe once a month. I though it was weird but couldn't replicate it so I never investigated further.

Now this winter the first time I went to use it, my car alarm went off for about 5 second and then stopped when the car started. Since then the alarm has not gone off again when starting the car, but it goes off DAILY around lunch time for no reason. I've emailed their support and they had me try resetting the module which I did but the issue is still happening.

Has anyone run into this issue before?

    TIA

Pop a new battery in the fob and see if it gets better. Otherwise it's absolutely an issue with the remote start box or however it's wired to disable alarm based on the behavior.

I was going to start a similar thread, but I don't have the addition of a remote start. And I've recently changed my fob battery :(
This winter as it got colder, I can count on my car alarm going off at least twice a week in the middle of the night. I've got a security camera in the garage, and I can confirm it's not an actual event where someone is messing with the car. I didn't have the issue until it started getting cold - which might just a red herring.
It's driving me (and I'm sure my neighbors) crazy. I've started just not turning the alarm on, but I'd prefer to be able to use it. If anyone has any ideas?

I have the 12V solutions kit and have not had this issue. It's entirely plug and play so its hard to mess up. You 100% sure you're not pocket bumping the remote or something isn't triggering it in the car (kids, pets, etc...)? I suppose since it touches the immobilizer if it has a fault it could do it. You could tear it out for a few weeks and see if it stops and RMA it.

I’m 100% sure I’m not hitting the keys or anything is triggering it as it has happened at work and parked in my garage at home. I’m gonna wait for their response first for any other suggestions but after that my next step was going to be like you said to pull it out for a week or two and see if the problem is still happening. I was just hoping someone else had insight before it came to that as it wasn’t a huge pain to install but I’d prefer to not have to uninstall/reinstall it again lol

I have the same kit and used your YouTube tutorial to install (great tutorial btw), went exactly as planned however a times when I remote start and then get in the car to go, as soon as I put the car in drive the entire car shuts off. Odd part is that this isn't consistent so I'm really not sure how to troubleshoot.

Huh weird, never had that happen. I have accidentally hit the start button out of habit before lol, but that's just me being thick. I would probably ping them and ask why that is. My only gripe is that the memory is based on last state, so if you turn your AC off for a nice windows down drive and kill the engine without turning the AC on the save state it starts the car in will be AC off... Not helpful on a hot day. Same with seat positions, etc... it just goes to whatever was set when you turned the engine off.

Glad you liked the video though!

It happens to me too. Either when I press the brake, sometimes on door open as well. Random. I’ve also had my turn signals not work. I wonder if it’s the particular module they send. I believe there are a few they use. I find it will happen mostly when getting into the car soon after the remote start. My heated seats also turn on dependent of temperatures, although I think that’s supposed to be a feature. Even with the quirks I have no regrets.

I'd suggest keyfob battery. Mine went off constantly. I disabled it with OBD until I changed battery. I re-enabled it and good about 4 months now.

Did anyone get the phone app? I start mine while 10 min early in cold NE weather. My FOB would be way out of distance.

So I completely removed the remote start module and the alarm is still going off, I also took the car to my mechanic to have him test the car battery as I figured maybe if it was going bad the cold weather (low voltage) could be messing with the electronics but he said the battery is fine. I'll try changing the battery in the fob next. Out of curiosity, how would the battery being low in the key fob be setting off the alarm?

Also if the fob battery doesnt fix it im tempted to just disable the alarm through OBD as well. Does anyone have a link for the process?

That's why I suggested battery first, there are many reports of unmodified Audi alarms going off when battery fob is low.

Though it is odd you said it happened one day while at work and car was home? Was your extra fob in the house?

I meant that the alarm has gone off while I'm at work with the car and at home with the car, just to show that its not something at work setting it off. Good to know about the key fob though. I didnt bother to try at first because I'm pretty sure my fob is out of range of the car where I sit in my office building but it doesnt hurt to try.

I'm not sure if that was truly the issue but it never came back. Battery swap is easy. Get one on Amazon in a day. To disable alarm via my OBD2 app I just said car didn't have alarm installed. Pop hood, hit start with foot off brake and select it from the avail menu.

Test your cars battery. Weak batteries can set off car alarms due to voltage fluctuations. It's free to find out . Test the battery in your trunk. MOST local auto part stores will test it for free.

Been happening to me as well in the very cold temps. If I leave my car in the garage it doesn’t happen as often. I have the drone version. I think it’s due to a weak battery in the winter.

    0 issues in the summer.

After speaking with their tech team, basically if the car is remote started and I come and unlock the car using the door handle, that'll trigger the car to shut off upon selecting the gear. We're suppose to use the remote key fob to unlock the car when remote started and upon unlocking it, there's a 45 second timer afterwards to get your poop in a group and get going before it shuts off. This is all according to their tech team btw.

Little update to this... The issue is still happening. Originally I just unplugged the remote start module, but left the wire harness in. Then completely removed the wire harness and am still having the issue. Also replaced the keyfob battery, and had my mechanic check the car battery as well. I'm out of ideas. As mentioned previously I could just disable the alarm but with the uptick in car break in's where I live I would prefer to not do that. I just removed my tune and am going to drive around for a week then take it to the dealership before my warranty runs out (49k miles so cutting it close). Fingers crossed they can figure it out.

Some battery testers aren't that great. I do this for a living. It really is as simple sometimes as a bad battery even if the tester says it's good. That same battery when left sitting may very well fail that same test 12 hours later . Especially in extreme temperatures. One bad cell in that battery could cause a big enough voltage dip. Also depending on your trim level. Your car may have an interior motion sensor.. does your car have this feature ?

Yeah I have a feeling it probably still is the battery as I've noticed it happens more often the colder it is out. I still need to get the PODS recall done too, so I figured now is as good of a time to take it to the dealership as it hasn't been once since I bought it lol.

Welp hopefully final update. Got my car back from the dealership. They scanned it and it pulled that the 7 most recent alarms were initiated by the panic button being pressed on the key fob. I explained to them that it was impossible as the key fob lives on my desk at work and is hung on a key hanger at home. They said they pulled back the button and there was a lot of crud inside so they blasted it out with air. So far no more alarms going off, but its only been a couple days. At this point I feel like it definitely is the key fob, so if blasting out the button didnt fix it im going to take the battery out and start using the spare key instead.
