    Loooong warmup on S5-ideas?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Back again -my 2021 S5 with 6000 miles is taking a long time to warm up.
Today-51 degrees out,car is cold, drove for 11 minutes before ANYTHING registered on the temp gauge;reaches 140 degrees at 14 minutes, and reaches 190 degrees after 31 minutes.
Obviously it’s under warranty and will go the dealer but nearest dealer is 50 miles away so trying to make an educated guess before I go.
Also, did get an OBD reader and scan and no codes show.
    Any suggestions are appreciated. Jim

Yeah, that's about right. I was driving for about 20 minutes yesterday before the oil temp even started started to move. It was 1C (34F) outside. My previous S5 was the same way as was my previous A3 and S4.

Thanks for the feedback-it just seemed really long to me, nice to know it’s normal.

I had similar temps in my area this morning. The first oil temp that registers on my 19 S5 is 114. I drive less than a mile in D until I am out of the neighborhood then I go to S. It will warm up quicker in S and you can still keep rpms under 3k or so until the temps come up. Operating oil temp is 176 and I normally hit that in under 20 minutes of traffic light driving and keeping the rpms under 3.5k.

pretty sure your car would set off a CEL stating the thermostat was stuck open. I had that code come up on my parents dodge caravan. Would imagine a super expensive S5 would have that capability. also your heater wouldnt work very well if that were the case also.

Then again most mopar products the past 5 years have had automatic start integrated on their key fobs while my fancy '19 s-line A5 sportback with the tech package doesnt have auto start at all, so you never know lol.

I mean yeah, at minus 51 degrees ambient, does not seem unreasonable.

At around 35 degrees F my S5 usually takes about 12 mins to register a temp on the oil and another 10 to get up to 170-180. I tend to take a little longer way on short trips to let it get up to temp (and also enjoy the car), dealer told me frequent short trips without the engine warmed up hastens the carbon buildup. Who knows. The highest I have seen the oil temp go up to was around 205-208 or so on the highway out of state going 90-110 for about 30 mins straight with several cars doing the same in front of me.

This is the benefit of an oil temperature gauge. Water comes up to temp quickly to provide heat in the cabin, and gives you the illusion that the engine is warmed up. However, the engine oil warms up much slower. In my RS5, the manual says to wait until the oil is 180F before driving aggressively. The colder the outside temperature, the longer it takes the oil to heat up. Just drive conservatively until the oil is up to the temperature specified in your manual.

As a side note, I have to wonder if some of the rocker arm problems reported elsewhere are the result of people relying on water temperature instead of oil temperature to determine when it is ok to drive aggressively.

I would suggest that very few people actually wait for the car to warm up before beating on it, so yeah, I can easily see some rocker arm issues being caused by that.

Remote start not being a standard thing is common for Euro mfgs...

Comparing a feature on a crappy Dodge to any German luxury brand is a huge LOL...

To be fair, BMW and Mercedes have had remote start on their North American cars for several years. Even VW has been offering it for a couple of years on several of their North American models. Audi seems to be a unique hold out in that regard. Considering that pretty much every other car manufacturer that sells cars in North America has remote start available as standard or as an option on most, if not all of their cars, it's weird that Audi as a luxury brand doesn't have it.

Yup, I was thinking the same exact point the other day. To be fair, I think it's better on the engine to start and drive, instead of idle when cold, but it would be nice to get into a warm vehicle and be able to immediately drive it like you stole it
