    RNSE Whoas

I recently got a nice RNSE head unit and though it appears to be in excellent condition, after using an adapter harness acquired off ebay, it doesn't even try to boot up...I hear, very softly, something turning on...maybe the CD player laser but nothing else...I've double checked all the connections but no forward progress....is there any way to repair or use this unit or is this just part of using old German stuff...sometimes it's amazing and sometimes not...?

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Did you check the 15amp fuse on the back of the unit??

I did and it looks good...but perhaps I'll swap it out for safe measures...

Are you sure the harness you have matches the radio? Fuse in the car is good?

This is the harness I thought I researched and used...everything, wires amd all, appeared to sync to where they were needed...I followed the Symphony II to RNSE writeup in the stickies... I'll replace the 15A fuse on neck of receiver to eliminate that an issue...

I also checked the radio fuse...it's good too...I swapped back to the Symphony II and everything works as it should...argh! Is there any place that can "repair" or check things out?

IF the stock unit works, I would assume your issue is with the new unit or the adapter harness.

If you hear it turning on, my guess is the display cable

Thanks for the suggestions...I suppose it is mildly obvious. I'll check out the wiring et Al and will report back.

FWIW you can hook it up and work on it on the bench. It does not need to be installed in the car. Connect V+ / V- power properly and you can troubleshoot it outside of the car- even enter the code.
I have a spare one, probably cables and parts and everything if you get any cues to what's up with it and need anything. Tons of videos on youtube or out on the web about how to troubleshoot it. If you have ever tinkered with electronics they're not very technical. But if it's stone cold and not connected to power they typically make some robot noises when you plug them in and the DVD head resets and aligns.
There are also a couple harness's ; Bose or NON-Bose are slightly different, and not uncommon for some cheap ones to show up wired wrong.

    RNSE Whoas

if it helps at all, it’s (in my case) the yellow wire (+) and the brown wire (-)

Also, there’s an amazon seller selling the display cables for the same price as aliexpress & ebay now, with prime shipping.

    https://a.co/d/55teGs9

You motivated me to troubleshoot my other RNSE. here’s a couple tricks I found.

the display tray open button should work without a display. Sometimes idk. I wouldn’t rely on this. Same with the fan, not really a consistent indicator. if you pull the display open by hand (has to be disconnected from power or it won’t move) even just a little bit, it will retract as soon as power is connected. Also, the dvd reader turns on as soon as it gets power. Stick a zip tie or something through the slot and see if you hear it hit the spinning navigation disk.

These just helped me find the issue. It’s once again, a display cable. It’s always the display cable smh.

I ended up swapping a cable from one of my other RNSE’s laying around and confirmed it.

This is excellent! Thank you for the suggestions @rollerton & @Gunnarrrrr !

I'm going to see if I can trouble shoot on the bench and then confirm wiring/pins on the harness adapter...

For verification, could you (one of you) snap a photo of the harness as it interfaces into the head unit? The big, locking harness into the back of the RNSE...please?!

FWIW the bottom two parts of that connector are for sounds/ data stuff and aren't needed for general troubleshooting. There's a diagram on the head unit that shows which connections are which. To get it to boot up and test functionality generally just need power/ ground.

I ran the bench test and connected the Yellow wire to positive and the Brown to ground and I got nothing; the headunit doesn't flash, turn on and I didn't hear anything either this time...I'm thinking the unit is crap...BUT, I haven't swapped out the 15A fuse in the back of the unit so as though it looks good, I'll swap that out for confirmation...

    Here's my harness adapter:

I marked the pin terminals in white for the bench test...
