    Resetting B8 rear brake caliper

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
When I replaced the B7 rear brake (manual parking brake), I used this tool to press-while-turning the caliper to reset it:

    https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c...al+brake&pos=0

Today I tried to use the same tool for the B8 rear brake (electronic parking brake), I was only able to compress the caliper by about 1/4 of the distance:

The factory manual uses T10145 to press the caliper, it looks like a simple expander that does not simultaneously turn the caliper piston.

Has anyone done a B8 rear brake without using that ridiculously expensive T10145 tool?

The turning is irrelevant on the B8. I just press the caliper in straight.

But you did the "open" adaptation for the EPB using a scan tool before starting the dismantling, yes?

As smac said - the rear caliper piston doesn't need to turn. You'll need to open the parking brake all the way with VCDS (as smac describes) then the piston can easily be pushed in.

You can also manually cycle the parking brake. Disconnect the the electrical connector then each pin can be connected to opposite sides of a 9v battery to cycle the brake. You can use most any battery, but I've only used a 9v.

I found it. It's that big drop-down box saying "Documented basic settings groups can be selected here". Silly me. Now I can compress the piston with my fingers to counter hold:

@Smac770 Thanks for the now you know moment.

I just pressed them in with a large set of channel locks. they don't get turned on a b8. I hope you didn't damage your caliper trying to turn them.

Although irrelevant, turning is okay. The piston surface offers three 120 degree apart notches as if it is meant to be turned (unlike the front). The rented tool can also be used, like my 2nd photo to not turn while compressing. All worked out great with minimum effort once I open the EPB from VCDS.

I just took the parking brake actuator off and turned the "screw" by hand. Then cycled the switch a few times when I was done, worked great!
