    2015 Q5 - Burning 1qt every 370 miles

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I ran a test after changing my Pcv to see how much oil I was burning.

Pre Pcv it was around 1qt every 280miles. New Pcv it’s at 1qt at 370miles. Car has 85k miles total.

Anyone in the Philadelphia PA suburbs area know of a shop that does the piston ring job at a reasonable price?

Same engine. A4 forum has a much bigger audience than the Q5 forum. Both have the exact same engine.

PCV is new. White top Audi OEM from FCPEuro.

I used liquidity moly gen with the UV dye and I’m noticing what appears to be glowing (using a UV light) mist splashed all over the engine and header. Not sure where it’s coming from.

Also I noticed that when I start my car in the garage from a cold start, there is specs of oil, maybe soot on my garage floor and door from the tailpipes:

naw, it just needs a tune up.

this was a close one but I'm still holding on to my record of 180 miles per quart..

Changed out the spark plugs today and also looked down the spark plug hole. It looked a bit moist on cyclinder 2 but I didn’t have a chance to scope it , just had a pen light on me.

Any thoughts on the spark plugs?

I switched the above out with a set of NGK BKR8EIX since I am tuned with IE stage 1 and noticed some sluggishness when getting into boost

Are you absolutely certain that it's oil on your garage floor in the earlier picture? It could be a result of bad injectors also... but then again, you would have misfires and other symptoms if they were indeed injectors. Also, if that is indeed oil on the floor, I would look at your turbo as well. That level of oil and soot coming from the tailpipe consistently probably means your catalytic converter is also clogged up from the residue of whatever is causing this. As for the plugs, they honestly don't seem too bad. My car has a CPMB motor and had really bad injectors that were misfiring. It also burns a quart every 400 miles or so. I changed the injectors and plugs, and the plugs were absolutely destroyed - a huge amount of white bubbling and carbon caked on the electrode, etc... and the car was still running ok that way for a while until I got in there. So in comparison, your plugs don't really seem to be a huge red flag to me.

I can’t be sure if it’s oil. My tailpipe looks black and when touching it, it is full of soot so it could be condensation+soot that was expelled at startup after I drove it in light rain the night before parking it.. I did run a lm OBD11 scan a few weeks ago and the only code I had was a soft code of: P11AF/004527. I cleared it and it hasn’t come back since. I’m not sure if it’s related or not.

In regards to the plugs, I was more curious to know if this looks like it’s burning oil through the cylinders. I suspect it may be my turbo burning oil. If I was burning that much oil through the cylinders to only get 370m plbefore having to add a quart, I’d be blowing blue smoke at startup and idle or when revving the engine in neutral. As of now I get nothing and it only seems to lose oil much faster during spirited driving.

Don’t get me wrong, I do think I’m burning some oil through the cylinder, but at the amount I’m losing I thought for sure the plugs would be completely oil fouled or shown significant signs of oil burning through the cylinder.

It's oil... Look at the plugs, ash fouled. Like iceman has said in the past, this engine can burn oil very efficiently.......

I just did my plugs 2 weeks ago on my 2014 2.0T. They had 30K miles on them, my engine has 110K miles on it and doesn't burn any oil between OCIs. This is what your plugs should look like:

Thanks for the reply Silver! What is the major difference between 'Oil fouled' and 'Ash fouled' spark plugs? According to this chart, shouldn't my spark plugs be coated in oil if I had worn rings (Oil fouled) vs being ash fouled?

That chart is correct but can also be caused by engine wear (pistons/rings, cylinder):

Changing the plugs is so easy in this car I would swap them out like you did and see if it persists. I also have a rebuild thread with parts that can help you if you end up going in that direction:

    check for hidden oil leaks.
My plugs looked significantly more ashed than yours and I was burning oil like crazy... or so I thought.

Traced the majority to a vacuum pump o-ring that was leaking like a sieve. Didn't leave anything on the floor- bellypan caught it all and dripped only when driving, hitting the cat and on down so i'm guessing a lot burned up as it dripped out. Very difficult to spot the leak when cold. After that fix, *significantly* reduced oil use.

My valve tray is leaking into the plug holes so that is all going to get redone soon. I think that is what caused the ashing of my plugs.
Maybe your cyl 2 plug hole is leaking down into the plug. Threads wet with oil?

really check for leaks. I would not have spotted mine correctly without uv dye and careful inspection.
Coincidentally, we are at the same mileage.

oddly, only smelled oil burning initial startup with heater on (so only in winter basically) which got me to search for the issue.
I had assumed my engine was burning so much oil because of the rings but, thankfully, looks like I'll gets some years of use after a cam tray reseal and timing chain service.
