Had a chance to test drive an S8 today and I brought my laptop and VCDS cable with me. Test drive wasn't good, car had a solid shudder around 3k rpm, didn't feel like a misfire and didn't throw a CEL. I asked the salesman if I could scan the car and he said sure. Once I pulled out a laptop he went inside to presumably update his manager... Then came SPRINTING out saying stop, you cannot do that. I aborted the scan but atleast 9 modules showed malfunction and I got the engine codes.
Mind you this was not an Audi dealer, but another brand name that happened to have an S8 on the lot.
My question is, is it acceptable to auto scan a car? These people treated me like a terrorist/hacker and were extremely rude after the incident. I explained exactly what the tool was and showed the cable and the partial results I did obtain. He responded with "are you ready to talk numbers?" Like what? I said no thanks and this is a deal breaker. They ended up showing me the door when I said this is a deal breaker especially given the car not running right. No goodbye or thanks for coming by, the guy just went back to the S8 and parked it. I have no interest in the car or this dealer at this point but curious if anyone had tried to scan a car and had issues with it? This is a car listed close to $45k and obviously no warranty.
