Stage 2 S3 folks - What spark plug gap are you running?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just curious what gap everyone is running and why? I have an APR stage 2 high torque and DSG tune on 93 octane. I decided to try APR's new Iridium Pro Spark Plugs and should have them installed sometime next week.

There's always conflicting info when spark plugs are brought up. I don't know a lot about spark plugs but I've always heard that a bigger gap = more power but with an increased likelihood of misfires.

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    I'll probably just go with APR's recommended 0.024 - 0.026

Your supposition is correct. There's a great book by Dr. Jacobs on ignition that gives you the science and takes all the "best sparkplugs" opinion out - you can judge by yourself. https://www.amazon.com/Doctors-Optim.../dp/B0050O8NBY . Highly recommend read and on various cars used various of his mods, tweaks and computer - his ignition could kill you or raise the dead depending on your initial status lol. I run the Beru RS7 plugs at stock gap which I think is .028, but on literally everything else including my race cars, Stage 3+ A4 at nearly 30lb of boost, and 11 other VAG cars I ran Denso Iridum at .044. Bigger gap = bigger power as long as your ignition is up to firing them. I'd open up the gap on these too, but these side gap plugs are sketchy to gap I think.

How often do you change your plugs? I'm only stage 1 and running stock plugs - just wondering.

Holy Cow! Even in stock form, Audi calls for change every 40k or 6 years, whichever occurs first.

oh, I quoted the wrong 2.0T, it's actually "Perform first at 35,000 miles or 6 years, whichever occurs first. Thereafter, every 40,000 miles or 6 years, whichever occurs first"

So, you're basically just following Audi's intervals? Most tuners recommend cutting those intervals in half. I was curious what others have done in this regards.

I may just end up following an interval somewhere in between Audi and tuners - say every 30k or so?

I've always heard the same for tuned cars. Some people use the stock plugs while tuners recommend colder plugs. The APR heat range 9 plugs I ordered arrived today and will be installed sometime next week. I've used NGK RS7 plugs in the past and I've been on stock plugs for about a year and a half. I'm debating whether to get new coils too

Pull the plugs, put them under a magnifying glass and measure the erosion... no need for second guessing or just randomly replacing. From a business standpoint, you've already spent the labor to take them out, so no value in measuring, just replace. For DYI, no reason not to measure for yourself how much wear they have in your driving patterns.

yeah, I doubt my butt dyno would notice any difference on this car, hasn’t on previous cars. It’s why I don’t bother with upgrading the coil packs too.

I'm more worried about misfires, knocks, etc. due to the plugs more than any butt dyno difference. But as long as the engine is operating fine without issues with that change interval and plug, then stick with what works!

makes sense, yeah, all good with stage2, and I abuse it almost every time I drive it.
