Hi - so grateful for this community. Trying to tap into the vast knowledge of the hive mind and get some input.
I got my current ride two years ago - other than a leaky water pump, she threw no codes etc. Little did I know of what was to come.
Had the timing chains replaced, the camshaft cradle resealed, and the vacuum pump replaced for a decent $4k about two years ago.
Then the oil consumption got worse. Last April, I had to install a new catalytic converter to pass smog and keep her registered. Four months later that error code and smoke out the tailpipes came back.
She currently has about 115k miles on her and is burning about a quart of oil every 300 miles or so. She started misfiring badly three weeks ago this Sunday while cruising up the 2.
Only because I was close, I had her diagnosed at the local dealership and was told that the fuel injector on cylinder 2 was bad. Instead of having to wait for an appointment until after Christmas and them only replacing one for $1,400, I got a Bosch kit from UroTuning for $400 and replaced all four.
Absolutely no change. Cylinder 2 misfire (P030200), Hide cylinder (P130A00), and P030000 (Random/multiple cylinder misfire) continue. She starts, but idles super rough. I don’t really drive her this way. But when I had to move her, she smoothed out around 2800-3000rpm.
They allegedly performed a compression and leak down test, which she (also allegedly) passed. I don’t trust that since I keep asking for a printout or any kind of info on the compression numbers and get absolutely nothing.
Audi of America - at this point - won’t do diddlysquat re piston replacement unless I pay for all of it. And that isn’t happening. I thought about rebuilding the engine - especially since she has all new timing components. But I don’t really know if that’s the best approach.
So, I have a mechanic I trust look at her on Monday. If it’s something small, I’ll fix it so I can drive her. But honestly, I think instead of throwing parts at her here and there, just waiting for the next thing to go due to her age and oil consumption, I’ve embraced the idea of swapping the engine.
I found a 2.0t CPMB one from a 2016 A5 with 45k miles for $3,500. I know I’ll have to swap the intake manifold, injectors, crank position sensor, accessory bracket over. Can someone explain to me when I would have to swap the flywheel (is that a manual versus automatic issue?). Does Quattro versus FWD matter? If so, how?
I’ve worked on my old A4 3.0 (most involved was fixing the transmission control module). Other than that, some engine work, steering components, the usual…
I’m not afraid of the swap. I have a place, tools, and friends who offered to help (even though if someone in the LA area wants to partake, let me know!).
I just want to make sure that I’m getting an engine that is indeed compatible. I can’t wait to have her in her best shape yet and actually get to enjoy her for once!
Sorry this was so long - appreciate any and all input. If you think I should just walk away and sell her, save it. I won’t. She’s mine and I just want to get her back in shape! Thanks much!IMG_4214.jpg
