    Coolant compatibility

    Hello,

I have an A4 that has g13 coolant in it currently. I have a leak and need to fill asap before I can fix it. Unfortunately I also have no Audi dealer in the area. Can I use the "violet" coolant off the shelf from Autozone etc or will that cause some clash with the current g13?

You can use distilled water in a pinch as long as the temp isn't freezing. The auto parts store brands should work fine and should say they are "G13 compatible".

Most auto parts stores have a European coolant available. Pink color.

i find most euro car parts store coolant ( violet) is premixed so its an added bonus if you need a quick top off.

my money is on coolant flange first then water pump ;)

Yes, use Pentosin E like Jayz691 said. If possible, grab coolant UV dye and a black light (Autozone should have them) and run it in the car for a day. Take a look around with the black light afterward. Anything leaking will show bright yellow. Like iceman said, check the coolant flange! Mine is leaking too haha

Did a cam chain job over the last weekend. If you have a thumb wheel ratchet and a right angle screw driver you will be a-okay.

I just discovered my vacuum pump is leaking and oil is traveling down to the new hose I just replaced that came off. This explains why it came off was due to oil contamination for some time otherwise it'd still be great if it wasn't for the stupid pump! This also explains why I had a brief 'stall' two months ago after I turned the car on - just shuts off and dies right away. Bought some gaskets will be renewing the damn pump. While I'm at it I'll most likely going to tackle that flange. Gonna be losing some coolant that's for sure. Ordered some G-13 as I've been using a combination of G-12/G-13 mix whatever I can get my hands on. I heard the newer G13 from VW Audi is 50/50 premixed.

    true on all counts.

I can do that flange in about an hour now or less, i posted some tips here a while ago to make it easier but have no idea where they are..

but i would say take your timing cover off and get a new gasket for it, gives tones of room and you can check your tensioner while you are in there.

from what i can remember about the flange .

    1. have a micro socket set. and some torx bits , there are 5 screws holding on timing cover.
    2. there are 3 holding on vaccum pump and a ground. that particular bolt is different and has a larg e head for holding on the ground bracket.
    3. loosen off the coolant hard pipe....
    4. remove the sensor, the hose with the disconnect and two bolts.
    5. bend coolant hose from hard pipe to flange and pull flange above engine still attached to hose...
    6. mark position of coolant flange on hose ( a lot easier to get flange off coolant line above the engine like this )
7 put new flange on hose in exactly the same clocked position
    8. unbend hose and hose will hold coolant flange in exact position to reinstall bolts behind engine ..
    9. bolt everything back up DO NOT OVER TORQUE BOLTS

    ^^
Thanks! Great tip. I knew those bottom bolts are gonna be a challenge. To be honest my flange still looks pretty new but I'm gonna tackle the vacuum pump while I'm thinking why not, because I don't want to go back in there in 3-4 years and remove everything again just to work on the flange.

ECS has the aluminum coolant flanges now, ~$60. I have one on the way, will install it once I see a leak from the backside. anyone else have one?
