You really need to stop investigating and thinkering with things... you're supposed to do your research first before touching anything.
That thingy that you are talking about it's the manual headlight adjuster. It has two. One that adjust vertical and one horizontal if your car has xenon they are control electronically the car has Level sensor on the suspension is a complex system even do it is possible to manually adjust them with a Phillips screwdriver. Put it back together the way it was. And DO NOT pop out or touch the lens.
And NO there's nothing to inspect outside the headlight if your DRL are not working in a Pre-facelift. To access the DRL you need to open the headlights I know because I have done it, to do a RGB setup. And honestly don't try that either, opening Audi headlights should be done by professionals. Find a headlight used and swap it.
Picture attached for reference purpose only show the shape of the DRL LEDs in the Pre-facelift headlights. The DRL works with 2 LEDs located at each end of the DRL strip, one that lights vertically and the other horizontally.
Cables are different do... again this one's are the one on my car and they're RGB they can change color.
But seriously moral of the story. Before you mess with your car. Research, research, research, then you can go hands on.
