Breaking Left Front Inner CV - allroad

    Hi All,

I tried searching but no luck.

I'm considering buying an allroad that keep breaking the left front inner CV joint. The first CV blew apart so the owner put in a replacement used axle in and within 15 minutes it self destructed in the same way.

Any idea what might cause this? It's hard to explain as just bad luck.

Any other relevant information? Is it an A6 transmission in an Allroad (common with 6-speed swaps)? Still on air suspension?

If the axle is too short, when fully bolted up (and therefore stretched), the bearings can escape the track of the inner race in the CV joint.

IIRC, the left and right axles are slightly different lengths, and allroad axles are slightly longer than C5 A6 axles.

Is it possible they used the wrong axles, either the wrong side, wrong transmission, or from an A6 instead of an allroad?

The Allroad axles aren't actually longer (measured in compressed length), but they have a different inner joint that allows for more articulation than the A6 inner joints.

What these guys said ^ Make sure it’s an Allroad specific unit.

Also, Autozone has them for $100ish and they’ll serve you well enough. Gold series or something branded like that, I believe.

Thanks for everyone's input. I had reached the same conclusion. The axles that were breaking were in fact A6 axles. I've got an allroad axle on the way. Fingers crossed.
