I would recommend Ravenol Gear Oil MTF-2 75W-80 GL-4 over the factory gear lubes. From my notes ETKA calls out G055532A2 for the 02X GJV. I have run both OEM lubes and the Ravenol has been the best for shifting and reducing driveline shudder. Should take 3.5 liters.

part number ending in 11A2 is listed as GL-5 fluid which should only be used in the rear diff. I never like to assume so I would confirm with a dealer that part number ending in 32A2 is GL-4 spec which is what you want for the transmission.

GL-5 is an API gear lube spec. The factory oil is not based on an API spec. It's also factory developed to work in manual transmissions, it even says that on the label.

Audi may not label their fluids per spec but I would be willing to bet they follow them as they specifically call for a GL-5 rated fluid for the rear diff in the factory manuals. That being said, and ECS tuning could very well be incorrect in their labeling, but the factory manual calls for the 11A2 part number for the 02X. Regardless, pretty much across the board, lube manufacturers say to use GL-4 fluid only in the transmission because it is friendlier to the softer metals used in the synchros and gear selector arms.

API stands for the American Petroleum Institute. Good to reference their gear oil rating if its a simple hypoid rear diff for the US market. However, the transaxle has synchros and hypoid gears all using the same lubricant. Using an oil that is tested for very specific conditions that only a subset applies to the transaxle makes absolutely no sense. Audi works with their suppliers to develop the factory fill lubes when they develop the transaxle. They may refer to standard tests but those are most likely not API specific (A good example of lube tests) https://www.swri.org/industry/lubric...fluids-testing

Things to consider: The wear surfaces of the synchros on the 02X are all faced using the Borgwarner developed carbon facing so the micro pealing of the face from high EP additives is not an issue. Fork faces don't have as severe loading as the cone clutches (not sure of the material)

As far as the O2x goes:

The Bentley manual, SSP 325 and various sites call out G052911A - this is the lube that I see some vendors listing as GL-5
ETKA calls out G055532A2 for the (GJV 02X 2004-2005 A4 six speed)

G052911A is a bit more expensive and uses a Thiadiazole EP agent. That EP additive is considered to have better corrosion protection to brass while providing good gear protection. My take is this is the higher performing lube of the two PN's, according to ETKA both are listed as compatible both are listed as transmission fluids and not for the rear diff.

So far of the four gear oils I have tested (G052911A, G055532A, Redline MT-90 ) I would strongly recommend Ravenol Gear Oil MTF-2 over the Redline or either factory gear lubes (OG Approved!).

    O2X Info: SSP http://www.vaglinks.com/docs/ssp/VWU...Assemblies.pdf

    https://www.widman.biz/uploads/Transaxle_oil.pdf

Also, on early manuals that may not have faced synchros EP additive level may be more of an issue.

Thank you for your extensive comments. Yesterday I ordered 4 liters of G055532A2, according to the specification of my vin number, it was also confirmed by the Audi dealer I called.

    Hi Kevin!
I second Ravenol, I changed it before we got these nasty low temp days. It's been nothing but perfect even in -20 days. I'll use this in all of my rigs, it's amazing.
