    ABS module error P1653

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have an S5 4.2 V8, year 2009 B8 model. Had my ABS module fail, recently sent it for a rebuild initially had a low voltage supply error but after rebuilding everythings gone but the errors below still appear, we found the wiring's deteriorating and rewrapped them, have checked battery voltage and health is ok, fuses look ok but not sure which exact fuse to check for the ABS units, anyone knows which one is it? everything else looks ok. Been stuck on these errors for months now and can't get rid of the error and the traction control and ABS warning light beeps up when starting the car and lighting up. Any ideas or anyone had this issue? Below is from my OBDeleven reader.

If you have OBDeleven, do the scan, find the history log, open it or email it and post the actual complete scan log text. The DTCs say check DTCs from ABS but all you post are DTCs from engine.

here's the full txt file i checked from the history, under brakes it says low voltage supply, i erased that and it didn't show up again after that last scan. Strange or could i be wrong, it points to two wires below the abs.

I forgot OBDeleven withholds freeze frame data unless you pay them the $50/year for PRO.

Read DTC memory of ABS CM (control module):
Upper limit exceeded & Implausible signal

don't really seem to go with
01200 - ABS valves voltage supply
01486 - System function test activated

But we have no freeze frame data to know fault timestamp or fault frequency or such.

    http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/01200
Note the last statement, no idea if it's relevant to the Bosch ESP 8 unit in our cars. But if the code didn't come back after several drives, then the DTC is no longer relevant.

If you clear the DTCs for 03-Brakes, do they go away or come back? If they come back, you probably need to start there. But it sounds like you've done that? Sometimes it takes several code clearing cycles to fully eliminate these secondary DTCs. Did the other DTC in 03-Brakes come back?

It could be something in 03-Brakes did set, tripped the DTCs in 01-Engine, but then self cleared on the 03-Brakes side.

i cleared the dtc's in brakes and it didnt come back, but the dtc in engine couldnt be cleared, it just says cannot be erased and just stays there, havent driven the car yet probably gonna go drive it around today to see if any pops up again, im still suspecting the wiring but my mechanic keeps sayings hes checked all wiring looms.

I'll try to get a freeze frame what does that actually say anyways?

"cannot be erased", that's odd. Never gotten that with VCDS.

    A VCDS example of P1653: https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...S5-error-codes
An old version of VCDS and probably not a HEX-V2 cable so no extended freeze frame data. But enough to see at the time of the DTC, the recorded voltage was excessively low. But the guy never came back and concluded his thread, that the DTC cleared after sufficient time with a new battery. He truncated the log, but we see from the header that 03-Brakes had no errors to display. So like yours, what are the 01-Engine DTCs hanging on to?

    https://forums.audirevolution.net/t/...ed-codes/16502
implies the DTC can be errant when other errors persist. You have other 01-Engine errors in your log, about the manifold flaps, "implausible signal". You might look to mitigate these DTCs and see if then the ABS ones will clear (ie, no errors present to perform full clear, otherwise full clear aborts).

The engine manifold flaps error has been there for a while, the abs error wasn't around until we had to replace the steering rack, then everything just went haywire.

The rack itself wouldn't be involved, unless a plug got swapped; know one case where a guy put the Servotronic plug on something else and the something else on the Servotronic (the plug on the rack).

Got me. The error messages are not informative enough on their own to speculate what they are trying to say, or even what tripped them.

Did the system function test error go away too? http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/01486

yeap all gets erased except for the two below from the engine section:

    Faults:
P1653 - Read DTC memory of ABS CM Upper limit exceeded
    static
P1653 - Read DTC memory of ABS CM Implausible signal
    static

Which points to the abs control module(which i've already sent for a rebuild), wiring harness (checked by my mechanic that says he's rewrapped all of it, but im still suspecting the wiring, or battery (which checks out fine otherwise i would've had a whole lot more errors popping up if the battery isn't healthy) or fuses (again mechanic says it checks out fine)

we did try a used ABS from the breakers with the same exact code numbers, that was worse off, the error showed no communication at all and i returned it. Do you know which fuse goes to the ABS in the S5 models or diagrams that the pins goes to?

Anything else i can try using the OBDeleven reader? I've upgraded to the pro account now, my mechanic's sure that the ABS module is faulty but i still don't think it is otherwise i would've had other errors coming from the ABS and not that one error.

The messages are from the engine control module, saying there's an issue with the brakes control module. But the scan says there's no issue reported by the brakes control module. So why is the engine control module running around crying wolf about a completely different control module?

The ABS fuse is the large one under the dash behind the headlamp switch, next to the term 15 relay.

    Is this also you? https://www.a5oc.com/threads/abs-low...iagram.178615/
Which they had clicked on freeze frame and gotten some actual details about the DTCs. P codes alone are only a starting point, and can be misleading without the details.

An example of a P1653 from VCDS:

Notice I can see the timestamps of the P1653 and the ABS error are the same, and I have fault frequency values. But all that matters in that instance is his voltage is too low. Under 12.0V, all bets are off and you need to fix the voltage issue before caring about anything else.

It could well be whatever the ABS is setting clears on power off; some DTCs do that. You'd need to scan once the issue occurs before turning the engine off.

Another B8.0 S5 with P1653 problems. But he has an actual ABS DFCC listed.

The ABS fuse is the large one under the dash behind the headlamp switch, next to the term 15 relay.

Which they had clicked on freeze frame and gotten some actual details about the DTCs. P codes alone are only a starting point, and can be misleading without the details.

Were you ever able to fix this issue? Currently am experiencing the exact same thing with my 2009 S5 4.2l. Replaced my ABS module and still am receiving the same codes as you
