    Steering Rack Replacement

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've been chasing a clicking noise and believe I have it pinned to the steering rack, specifically near the input shaft.

Looks like there have been many revisions to the rack, and the latest is 5Q1423055M (no dynamic steering). Does anyone know if this is available from an OE supplier, not just VW? Will an indy shop be able to replace it or dealer only (as I've read it requires an SVM code + coding via ODIS?)

    Thanks

I replaced mine with used one without coding. It is with dynamic steering. If it's brand new rack I believe you need ODIS.

I'm considering going this route but it seems a bit involved for my to DIY. Have to drop subframe? Or able to get by without dropping it completely?

    Thx

    Car is a 2015 S3 Premium Plus

Leaning towards a used rack + indy shop install. That's about $800 all in vs $2k+ for a new one at dealer?

I have VCDS and ODIS but presumably can't code a new rack without a dealer-supplied code?

    The manual says:

Perform the Steering Angle Sensor - G85- basic setting using
    the ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic tester.

It is necessary to adapt the electro-mechanical power steering
using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic tester if
    new steering gear was installed.

VCDS should be all ya need
    2015 S3 with 210,000 miles with new 2019 Q5 motor. Still going!

Sweet, thanks. I saw somewhere (but can't find the thread now) of someone saying you need ODIS with a VW-supplied SVM code to code a brand new rack.

Going to try replacing my tie rods first, if that doesn't help will go with a used rack.
