    Question Supercharger Squeaky Noise

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi,

My s/c seems to be squeaking. I've replaced the s/c belt tensioner and idler pulley, but the noise still exists. Once I remove the supercharger belt the squeak goes away.

Here is a link to the noise hopefully, you can hear it easily.

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/1bxm...usp=share_link

Any ideas on what I need to replace in order to resolve the issue? I'd rather have the parts on hand before I take the s/c off, instead of waiting for the parts to arrive which can take some time these days.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks heaps.

    Peace out
    PK

Mines doing this too, it could be the front section of the supercharger. There’s a bearing cartridge up there. I’m not surprised with the amount of pressure being pulled in the shaft from my heavy duty tensioner plus slightly undersized belt.

I changed the SC oil when I had it off but I have a feeling I created the stress on the bearings.
This front section, you can see a few bolts where it connects…

Second video wouldn't play for me. Get a mechanic's stethoscope and see if you can pinpoint exactly where the noise is. If it's bearings and they're bad enough to make noise, you should be able to feel it just turning by hand. There shouldn't be any axial or radial play in the snout.

Have you tried a different belt? Honestly that would be my first suspect.

Yeah you will need to download it from google drive as google drive won't play the format.

Does anyone have the part numbers of the bearings. So I can get a price before I proceed. I assume the coolant pipes from one i/c to the other will need to be removed first.

I did get it to play after downloading it now. Really tough to tell. Undo the belt and spin it by hand. Push/pull on the pulley in/out and up down and side to side and see if there's play. Spin it and see if it feels like it grinds or has a tight spot.

It still sounds like a belt squeal to me.

Have you changed the belt? I changed all the pulleys and idlers and the noise stayed until I did the belt twice. Our cars don’t like certain belts! For me it’s bando and Bosch.

spray some water on the belt or rub some deoderant on the belt. it totally just sounds like belt squeek.

Na, trying to find one locally.

Previously had a Gates XRPM 7PK1310 on it. So I ordered the ECS Kevlar one, swapped it to that and then replaced s/c tensioner and idler as well. I will try and source another 1310 local one. Should I bother trying to find a 1300 one?

I was going to get one of these, assuming it will fit. 7PK1310 off a Fiat 500 - https://www.catch.com.au/product/pol...1310-12567919/

I did this to troubleshoot the squeak after the ECS belt went on, that's what lead me to replacing the s/c tensioner and did idler because we were there and it only took 48hours to get the part.

I will try it again when I can. Car only has 80,000kms and been dual pulley for less than 10,000kms. I wouldn't expect anything to have given up yet but it's getting on I guess (2010).

I am 187/57 with ecs kevlar 1310 (no squeaks, although a minor squeak when brand new....disappeared after maybe 10 miles). you might have a heck of a time getting a 1300 on.

EDIT: Oops. Just went out and took a look. I have a 1300 belt on my s4

With a new tensioner and idler pulley it really wasn't a struggle at all. I think I could quite easily get on a 1300. I have 189/57 (fluidampr) but I haven't seen this with my own eyes as it came with the car.

I will throw on the old belt and go from there. Update soon to come.

Yeah 1300 felt like it would go on pretty easily.

This one might be worth my buying to help troubleshooting. Waiting on ramps to get under it to get the tensioner pin in...I'm just one guy here.

Buying belts right now for single/dual pulley is ridiculous. I haven't been able to find a belt better than a Bando in months.

I think I muscled a 1300 Kevlar on and ordered a 1310 Kevlar at the same time that came in months later. It’s Been sitting on my shelf in the garage waiting for the 1300 to go south! Hahaha

I ordered a Gates RPM belt in May and I received it in August. Does anyone know if a 1300 RPM belt will fit with a stock upper / lower 177mm crank pulley? Now I am running a Conti 1290, but I believe there is some slip.

I think I'm in the same boat. Took it for a spin (don't get to drive her much) and the squeak seems to disappear. Still there on a semi-warm startup. Good to know it is just the belt though. I will give it a few more blasts from cold starts and see how it does with a few kms on the belt. Still waiting on a new belt to arrive.

I wonder at what % of fuel in the oil it would become noticeable to the human nose. Petrol is strong and oil not so much, when ever you go to smell oil you really need to get your nose close to it... and way I digress. I have my oil sample here, gonng get some out of my extractor and ship it off tomorrow. Then I will know more.

Finally got a new belt on. Squeak went away for my test start. Pulled her off the ramps etc and then went for a proper test drive...squeak returned but not as bad. So some of the squeak was belt for sure but the main part still remains. It definitely is a lot quieter now but still embarrassing as people look. I will try and capture audio but I guess my next step would be to either

    A) Try her without the S/C belt on at all
    B) Replace accessory belt

I purchased the bearings for the supercharger from a Eaton supplier called:
    Superchargers online

    https://superchargersonline.com/

What I purchased was most of the bearings with exception of the ones between the nose and the gears on the rotor side. Doing the nose bearings and the needle bearings on th rotors was not to bad of a job but the needle bearings are a challenge to remove then you have to have a rod turned to the correct dimensions to press the new ones in.

interesting tool... most of us use a blind bearing puller.

what does yours look like that allows you not to break the needles/ cage first?

That's his press tool for install, not removal.

Correct, the "Rod" or round stock is what I machined to install the new needle bearings. I turned the end down to the same size of the end of the rotor shaft and also put a small step on the end as to recess the new needle bearing down into the bore for the needle bearing. I made the tool to ensure the bearing was being held true to the bore it is being pressed into. I did not want to try to match the OD of the needle bearing race and tap it in. I am not sure how other folks did this. I did have access to a lathe and a pretty deep press to get it done. The hardest part of the job was removing the old needle bearings. This is the "puller I purchased to start with:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Had to carefully grind this taper flat because when putting pressure to pull the needle bearing it kept popping past the outer race into the needle area. The angle was allowing the Collet to collapse making the OD slightly shrink thus not holding.

Any update? Could it be bearing noise? Sounds like you tried everything else.

The part number for the drive unit is 06E145607A

I can't find any reviews from users that have replaced the entire unit.
