    Tick noise B8 A4

Hello guys, so it’s been getting really cold here in CO. Every time I start my 2012 A4 Avant 2.0 TFSI, I hear a loud ticking noise. It’s very noticeable even from my window when I remote start it. I also noticed it feels like a misfire only on cold starts. I have no DTC on. After a few seconds it goes away, and vehicle drives fine when warmed up to operating temperature. I was wondering if you guys have any input on what it could be. I’ve owned the car for a little over a year now. I’ve put a little over 13k miles on it. I have heard the tick ever since I’ve gotten it. It has been getting louder tho and more noticeable. I’ve done 4 oil changes, using Audi OE engine oil filters, just because I commute a lot and I let the vehicle idle quite a bit as well. I’ve done one BG Engine Performance Restoration service. I’ve added 2 BG MOA engine oil supplement for 2 of those oil changes and one BG “44K” fuel additive. I have always used 91 premium fuel for every fuel up. I replaced spark plugs about 6k miles ago using Audi OE plugs; it didn’t seem to make any difference. The vehicle has had an IE intake, and an ECS diverter valve; no tune; since I’ve owned the vehicle. I’m just curious as to what that tick noise could be, or if you guys have any input on where I could look for if I am in need of a repair. Here’s a video of what I am hearing. Thanks guys. https://youtube.com/shorts/EAYQz4fKLSw?feature=share

Im not an Audi specialist but that generally sounds like valve train noise on a cold startup. Takes a few seconds for oil to get up there when its really cold. If you're doing regular oil changes and using the correct additives, thats all you can do. I usually use Lucas to help any lubes stick to stuff when its cold. Not sure thats the correct answer here.

I have a '07 B7, a '10 B8 and a '10 TT. The older B7 (EA113) does make a loud (uncomfortably loud) valve train noise at crank start, just like your case, lasting only a second, warm or cold (so cal). However, both B8 (EA888 with AVS) and TT (EA888 no AVS) do not have that noise at startup.

I have a 2015 a4 and I also noticed that when its cold weather outside, on cold start it feels like theres a small misfire every 20-30 seconds for the first 1-2 minutes, but once I start driving it goes away. Everytime that small misfire happens, I can feel the car shake just a tiny bit.

Sounds normal for a cold startup.

clean the intake valves. the direct injection engine is infamous for intake valve carbon buildup. when the engine is cold the valve doesn't closely completely, you get misfires and the engine shakes, especially at low RPM. after the engine is warmed up, the buildup softens and the low rpm misfire goes away.

i had rough cold engine idle before and after using the CRC intake valve clearner, it went away. it's come back again after a year or two, so i'm going to do it again at my next oil change.

Did you ever experience this in warm weather conditions? I noticed for mine, it gets worse with colder weather. But when its pretty warm lets say over 50 degrees, the rough idle is gone.

sorry but that is absolutely not why you experience cold start misfire softens and valve closes ?? who told you this BS .
