Would getting one be a mistake?

Well I need a small SUV for a daily driver and coming from performance cars my excitement has been uneventful. I was looking at getting something reliable and was ready to go look at some 2005-06 CRVs when yesterday I researched "Fun small SUVs you can modify". The Q5 popped up and I had an "Oh yea!" moment. I talked to my wife and she has always been a closet Audi fan but never owned one so now her and my son are really pushing the Audi Q5 and being truthful about them never even liking the CRVs. I immediately started day dreaming and looking at mods I could do to it down the road, until reality set in...

I looked up issues they have. Specifically the oil consumption and timing chain issues. So I want to ask you guys...Would getting a 100,000 miles Q5 as a daily be a mistake?

sure as long as it's the 3.0T and maintenance is well documented.

That's what I was assuming. I've been looking at the 2.0T for fuel economy mainly. I've read tuned ones can get over 30mpg.

If you want good fuel economy, fun to drive and reliable, might look at the Q5 TDI. A 2015 or 2016 with less than 60k miles can still be found and they have the extended warranty from Audi for 10 years from in-service date or 120k miles for drivetrain and emissions system. Like with any, a good service history is a must.

If it's the 2.0T there's a strong potential for it to be a 'mistake'. Best is to purchase one from family or friends that's known to not burn oil.

That's why ILVTRANCE suggested the 3.0T, to avoid all that. Many here feel the supercharged 3.0T+ZF8 is Audi's most reliable drivetrain. The main issues with it are water pumps and PCV valves which cost about $1200 each and are certainly in the realm of DIY.

My tuned (034 ECU/TCU stage 1) gets 24 mpg on the highway, not bad for 400 rwhp.

The 3.2L is a better choice than the 2.0T but I don't think it gets the ZF8, and it's not tuneable.

The 3.0T is available in both Q5 and SQ5 trim. The SQ5 comes with more HP from Audi, but the hardware is nearly the same (I think the SQ5 has an extra cooler). Put a stage 1 tune either one and they end up at 400 rwhp. I've heard the SQ5 rides much stiffer, and it is more expensive.

I just picked up a 2016 Q5 3.0T P+ with only 37k miles on it. Super well taken care of, 1-owner. So far extremely happy with. It’s my second car. I have a 16 S3 as well.

Great job. 3.0 is the motor to have for day to day and if you so wish you can get this car in the elevens with not too much effort.

Nice grab! Wife and I scored a similar find pre pandemic mess. 16 sq5, went with apr stage 1 on it and it’s a hoot.

I run a vortex mk7 R as well. Two totally different driving experiences. The R is manual, tighter, faster….the wife hates it. So we’re in the sq5 more often. It’s massive fun to drive even with the power/handling difference. You won’t be disappointed.

Yeah so far I love it. I want to get more supercharger whine! So for the OP, you can't go wrong. Find one with low miles and get it. Mine was a bargain at $23k imho.
