2010 Audi B8 A4 2.0Tfsi CAEB Died while Driving and Doesn't Restart

Hi All,

I am struggling with an issue that just came up on my B8 A4 Avant. I've done a fair bit of work to this car recently and have driven it about 800 miles since with no issues. Yesterday I was driving locally and the car lost power, misfired a couple of times and died at about 20mph. I pulled over and turned the car off, attempted to restart, and the car wouldn't fire up. It's cranking and there are no lights on the dash. I have posted a scan below and was hoping someone on the forum has experienced something similar with their 2.0t.

A few other clews that I noted while on the side of the road. - It smelled like gas around the engine bay after the incident -- After opening the oil cap out of curiosity it really smelled of gasoline ----

Did you have any awareness of the state of the timing chain before this? Have you looked at the state of the tensioner extension through the inspection cap on the lower timing cover? Or ever noted the camshaft adaptation intake bank 1 value after the car was warmed up and driven some and then idling (to make sure the value is meaningful)? If not, you might want to pull that hole cover and look. But that's only because the chain issue is a real thing that too many people either ignore or don't know about till their valves are smashed.

But fuel in the oil, the HPFP probably just trashed, or the injectors. You'd need a scan tool to monitor the fuel pressure while cranking, is it holding around 4000 kPa or no.

Spins but won't ignite. compression, fuel, air, spark.

You got a lot of electrical issues. Why does the car think you have HomeLink but neither the transmitter nor controls are found?

All good questions, and I thank you for your help. I will post an updated scan with some of the old codes cleared. I had the fuse out of the HomeLink to add my radar detector before the car started acting up that's why we see that pop up on the scan. The door lock modules on a couple doors are busted but I haven't had time to look into that quite yet so ive been ignoring them for now. There are a few other codes but for our purposes here ive been ignoring them too.

The car just had a timing service done roughly 1000 miles ago. Both chains, all tensioners and guides, timing covers/ oil pan, and a new oil pump. The car has been running like a dream for the last bit but this seemed odd to me. I have a new HPFP and will be installing tonight. I will get the fuel pressure before I do so using VCDS and report back...

I also just noticed on that scan that the battery voltage seems a bit low, should it be reading 11.7 when the car/ key is in ACC mode during a scan?

It is low; I assume the battery is simply run down from trying to start the engine and running the ignition without the engine running. You'll want to put a charger on it to bring it back up if you can.

Alright Im Back at it and worked on the car after Christmas with the family. I got the new HPFP installed with a new cam follower. The measured fuel rail pressure was low during cranking so I figured I was headed in the right direction....

I got back to the garage this morning, changed the oil and fired it back up. It took about 30sec. of cranking to get it to go but it finally started and ran it for roughly 20sec.. Unfortunately, it's was running with a misfire but it seemed like only a single cylinder. I scanned with VCDS and got the same cylinder misfire codes that I saw before. At this point the car was smoking pretty substantially out the tailpipe. I turned it off and figured it would be best to prepare to log some date to sort this out. Here is what I learned.

The car is commanding a Fuel rail pressure of roughly 5350kPa before startup. The car struggles to start and build the pressure efficiently. It eventually does and the car starts up. It runs but with a misfire, and the actual rail pressure is inconsistent + its dumping fuel into the exhaust somehow.... all things are starting to point at a hung injector that's stuck open. The real indicator is the drop in rail pressure after the car is turned off. I have a new injector I will try tomorrow, with some new seals for all 4 + the intake manifold seals. Once I test and confirm this is in fact the issue I will update.....

Yes I know I should replace all 4 injectors but I'm on a budget and will go back in for carbon cleaning in the spring, at that point i will install 4 new injectors.

Not sure where you ended up but the misfire could also be an ignition coil. No fire in cyl, injector still squirts and you get unburned fuel going out the back. Coils are a very common failure. VCDS should tell you which cyl is misfiring. You can swap coils between misfire cyl and a working cyl. If misfire moves to the new position you know coil needs to be replaced.

Or if you have another VW/Aiudi or have a friend with one, swap in all their good coils temporarily.

Hard starting is commonly the failing for the LPFP system. It is an electric pump and is used to start car. The HPFP is mechanical and driven by the motor so it doesn't really start pumping until car gets to idle.

GIA, Thanks for the response. I did eventually sort it all out. It was in fact the injector in cylinder number 3. I ended up removing the intake manifold doing a full walnut shell blast of the valves and replaced all the fuel injectors. The engine seems happy now.

The low pressure pumped was checked through the measuring block in VCDS, it provides a % duty cycle and i was duty cycling at about 45% which is within normal spec. I will likely have to replace the LPFP but not quite yet.... hahha.
