Rear hatch only opens with driver's door switch

And...it closes only by hand. But I must pull it down a foot first. Then the motor engages and sucks it down nicely. Thus, we have a hatch button that does not respond to open and release the latch AND a "close" button on the hatch that does nothing.
Could these be related? I purchased the car a few months ago with both not functioning. Thanks for the insights as I am sure someone of you have been down this road or seen it before.

Scan for DTCs, see if there's any known errors the vehicle systems are already reporting.
So you can open it with the driver's door switch but not with the key fob button? That seems odd. That the controls on the rear lid are locked out could be the CAR central locking menu selection, I forget the entry name.

Have you checked if the Door button is disabled from MMI ? I think it could be enabled/disabled from one of the menus.

    Got a couple error codes:
02364 Pull-shut Asst. Implausible Signal code.
Also, a 02242 Rear Lid Lock Button In the Luggage compartment. Implausible Signal.
I haven't tried the luggage compartment button, but it likely doesn't work!

Thanks for the link, Smac. I don't think that is my problem. The button on the hatch lid lights right up, just "asking" me to push it! But no matter where or how hard I push, the hatch will not close without me pulling it down 6 inches first. Then it pulls itself closed.
Honestly, it is a hard pull down and if I could just get that button to respond, I may be happy enough! And yes, I can take off the panel and look around. But if this is something I need a part for, it would be nice to have handy first!

Not sure then. It's the kind of thing I'd use VCDS to monitor the measuring values while I pressed buttons and see what does and does not register the expected values. Then consider wiring and the buttons. And play with it till I found the logic fault.

I wonder if you're able to reset the "how high the tail gate opens" distance. Maybe some stored value has become corrupt and it thinks things are out of range. It would seem odd for it to not work but then work if the lid is just a little bit down. When you pull it downward, it then closes without further interaction. Or you have to pull it down some, and then you press the button to make it close? If you stop it opening all the way (press the inside button when it's half way), does the inside button now work to close it? Guess that doesn't solve why the rear button nor the key fob work to open it.

So recently I've started having issues with my rear hatch. It only occurs in the morning when it is bellow zero. 2 days in a row I have to manually close the lid. After that when I open it during the day everything is fine. I guess it might be something related to the mechanism in the door itself. I will remove the plastics and check what is going on there. I have some wd40 so I will spray a bit.
