Passed CA Emission with an ECU tune.

    Background:
    Car - 2008 S4
Exhaust - piggies + Miltek catback
removed FI catless downpipes and installed OEM downpipes piggies pre inspection for visual
    Tune - JHM 91
ECU has stock and 91 tunes. It was set to 91 when the inspection was done as SAI readiness would not complete with the stock tune
91 Tune - SAI delete, secondary O2 sensor set, plus what ever comes with the tune
Note: also have Jackal tune on another ECU but also could not get the SAI to complete readiness
Readiness status - all passed except for EVAP Emissions. EVAP readiness is not required
Visually the car looks stock except for the catback

    Smog inspection:
    Overall - passed
Visual - passed, I don't think the tech actually inspected the car. I might have distracted him talking tabout his RX7-FD.
Emission control system functional check - passed, OBDII read, etc.

Now do I install the FI/JHM catless downpipes back? I am enjoying the low end torque of the piggies but miss the top end and noise the catless downpipes makes.

Overall message: Possible to pass CA emissions with ECU tune and stock visual in front of the catback.

Have to be careful about the software. I've seen vehicles pass with the APR tunes only to get kicked to REF on the next round of smog. At that point, REF will make life a living hell going as far as to force people to buy OEM ECU's from manufacturers with proof of purchase. I went through this with a customer's Mustang that they programmed to accept a larger diameter intake system and he complained about the whole process for the 3 weeks we had to deal with it and REF.
PS - They are monitoring the CAL ID and CAL CVN numbers.

Visual is totally up to the inspector but the software is all computerized so there's no mucking about with it, unfortunately.
