Groaning when turning at low speed

The allroad has decided it needs some more TLC recently after having the wiper pump and grommet replaced only a month or two ago.

In addition to splitting a CV boot on the passenger side of an RHD vehicle, it has also started to make a groaning noise when turning the steering at low speeds, a bit more when turning to the right than turning to the left.

It doesn't make the noise when driving at speed presumably as its not loaded up as much.

It feels like its coming from the drivers side of the car, but I haven't had it jacked up to check yet.

Any ideas what this is likely to be to start narrowing it down would be appreciated. Is it more likely the pump or the rack?

For anyone else who runs into this issue, a power steering fluid change solved the noise. I think the oil must have worn our or maybe the filter was a bit clogged causing cavitation

I guess unlike southern California, oz is snowy in the winter and rainy in the summer. Moisture could accumulate in the mineral oil based power steering fluid. Where I live, low fluid level makes the whining sound -- fixed simply by add more CHF 11S.

Yep I have C5 2.8L 30v A6 Quattro and my power steering pump was growling in the cold morning and after getting the motor up to operating temps the noise went away.. finally last week I did a full flush i used a turkey baster to pull out the fluid from the reservoir until I couldn’t withdraw any more, than used the Pentosin green can power steering fluid and filled it about 1/4 of the vol. started the car did light driving on my side street to work new fluid in to recirculate the remaining old.. I then pulled that all out and repeated this 2x times then topped off with all new fluid.. pump is quite as new now.. that should help your situation.. hope so it’s easier than opening up the lines

Seems like I still get a little noise in hotter weather some times (35c+ ambient). Might need to pull out the filter and give it a proper clean it out or something, and try a more thorough flush.

Either that or see if there is a heavier weight of chf11s somewhere.
