    Shitbox Track Car(?) Project

Hi guys, I know nobody is reading this but I decided to start my own build thread as kind of my diary.

    My backstory:
Back in 2019 I bought a 1998 b5 a4 1.8tq as my first car. It was badly maintained peace of sh*t (still it is tough). The only reason I got it was simply because it was the cheapest car with manual transmission in my area. But i fall in love with it as i found out b5s are highly tunable and they have cool super touring heritage.
For about two years I enjoyed casually driving and kept it mostly stock other than pss9 coilovers and magnaflow exhaust but soon after I hit my first track day, I'm addicted to it and decided to make my b5 into a track car.

    Current modifications:
    Bilstein pss9 coilovers
    Magnaflow 2.5" cat back
    Eudodyne maestro stage 1 tune
Porsche 996 4 pot front calipers
Gripper rear clutch type limited slip diff
    Fully Gutted interior
    Recaro spg bucket seat
    Schroth 4 point harness
18×8 OZ superturismo or 17×8 superleggera wheel (depending on my mood)

You know, forum activity has decreased across the board over the last decade, but I think you’ll find quite a few of us die hard a that still care.

Stoked to see another poorly maintained car get another life, especially as a race car. I’m building mine into a rally car. https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...QM-Restoration

I haven’t seen the Gripper rear LSD before, I’ll have to look into that.

    Keep building, and keep sharing!

I read your tread, awesome project and really eager to see your progress!

I originally planned to go with OS giken but their customer service was really terrible, so changed my mind to gripper. I ran only about 3000 miles with it so far it works great and almost no noise. What I like about gripper is that there are many spec to choose from (like 1 or 2 or 1.5 way, different preloads etc) and you can change it later if you want. But their off the shelf spec might be too weak for a rally car so you might have to go with a custom built one.(I don't know anything about rally car though)
I heard some people experienced significant preload drop after only few thousand miles so I'll see how mine goes…

I think OZ SL/UL wheels are among the best looking on these cars.

Also, PSS9s have been my favorite coilovers.

Yeah I think you'll see that the b5 community might be small but there are lots of active people still checking this forum and offering help or selling parts/tunes in the classified section. Your car is nice, do you know how much weight was removed from gutting the interior? Also are you in japan like your tag says? If so that's pretty awesome theres a tuner b5 out on the japanese tracks

I’m glad there’re sill many hardcore b5 guys and some actually replied to this thread.
Last weekend I had my car weighted. Result was 1281kg ≒ 2824lbs without me on it. Gas tank was 3/4 full. I’m pretty happy with the result considering my car still has all steel body panels and AC.

Yes, I’m living in Japan. B5s are pretty rare in here as only 150 1.8t with manual and less than 100 S4s were officially imported. Many of them have been scrapped because people do not care about these cars. Also b5 is the only generation a4 that manual were available in here. many people are surprised when they find out my car is manual and sees me as weirdo because nobody tracks Audis.

Nice setup! Must be nice for Touge/Hillclimb events :)

Keep us posted on how that Gripper LSD performs. Looking forward to hearing feedback with it on a B5.

Any plans for beefer sway bars or a 4:1 center diff upgrade?

You'll need to showcase the capability of the B5 platform to Japan :)

    Some inspiration:

    Cheers,
    Thanks!
Beefer sway bars and a 4:1 center diff upgrade are definitely on my to do list.
These super tourer and ex-works hill climb cars are so cool. I read somewhere that Marko racing team’s 1.2 swapped STW A4 weights less than 1000kg with a quattro system and roll cages… just unbelievable.

Sounds like a fun build. Wild seeing these in a right hand drive format as were all lefties here, for the most part.

Awesome! Looking forward to your progress!

Yeah man they are so cool! Marko has been building/rebuilding that STW A4 for ages, its amazing.

Alex Mirea also ran on a B5 platform for a while, bummer he moved onto different platforms.

So…I love super touring cars from 90s so much so I decided to make super tourer look splitter from scratch with a help (I mean mostly done by him) of good friend of mine Goro. I really can’t thank him enough for everything he’s done for me. Our plan is to make 3D printed mold from 3D model and make fiberglass or maybe carbon fiber? Splitter from it.
I know Rieger tuning sell stw splitter but it looks cheap and not accurate for me. Also there are various splitter through by years. Rieger one is ’95 looks like But I like ‘97~98 ones. They are very different as you can see in the picture.

    scan.jpg
3D scanning process… Black circle things put on the bumper are markers for scanner so it doesn’t get lost.

3D model of the splitter made by Goro
3D model is almost finished so we’re gonna print a mold pretty soon. If everything goes well, we might sell one. So stay tuned if you are interested.

Oh that is quite nice :) Well done!
    I'll definitely stay tuned.

Is that a kinect camera for the scanning?

One thing I learned is you HAVE TO upgrade the power steering cooler. Stock is just a tube it's shit. I didn't and it cost me big time. Pick up a Hayden 401 transmission cooler. You will deeply regret it when you don't and have to replace every power steering component

Thanks for the advice! I’ll definitely do that before the next summer comes.
