No sensors. Don't let them charge you.

I have a 2014 A7 and have been wondering about what's in my tires? The car knows when a tire drops pressure but it doesn't know how much. What is in my rims? I know it doesn't relay the actual pressure but I was thinking that changed by 2016 like the original post is asking.

The C7 and C7.5 A and S cars use the ABS wheel speed sensors to determine whether all wheels are rotating at the same speed (within some margin of error obviously) and when it detects that one or more wheels are rotating at a different speed than the others, it recognizes that as a pressure differential as reduced pressure would result in a tire squatting and having a smaller effective diameter. I assume the system is based on averages over a long-ish distance as simply turning changes relative wheel speed.

Thanks for that info. So what is inside the valve stem on these cars? Nothing? Where is the ABS sensor located? Within the brake caliper?

Just a normal rubber valve stem, nothing fancy. The wheel speed sensors are located on each wheel hub assembly, upper knuckle area. The correct term if you want to read more on it; Indirect TPMS (versus Direct)

So if I install new rims on my C7 A7, the tire shop can just use the regular valve stems that were used pre-TPMS? That's good to know.

I'm about to change my rims and tires on my car.
