Question about new clutch friction disc

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I recently bought a clutch kit for my 3.0. The friction disc has a few chips on the outside edges friction material. The vendor says 'this is normal and no problem, if we send you a replacement it will have the same condition'

Is this really normal and acceptable? I've never replaced a clutch and am dreading the experience; I don't want to do it twice!

I don't think a chip that small will affect function however. It would seem that vendor is selling lightly damaged items as new. Find another vendor.

Thanks, reasonably priced parts are getting hard to find... and Audi is not offering any clutches on their web site any more.

The vendor is rock auto, btw. First item I've received from them that's damaged. Second item was my 3.0 flywheel, a few rust spots I'm sure will be scraped off as soon as the clutch is used.

I noticed LUK, despite being an OEM, does not do a great job of packaging their clutches.

While we're on the subject of clutches, without starting a new thread...

I'm probably going to have to do my clutch in the spring, does anyone have any opinions about changing from a stock dual mass to a single mass? good idea or bad idea? I'm considering installing a stage 1 just for longevity over an OEM.

I replaced my SouthBend OFE-SS dual mass with the Valeo single mass kit 10 years and 100k miles ago. Some discussion on dual vs single mass in this thread. Clicky clickŪ️

Still very happy with how it performs.

Southbend for the win I agree. Just make sure to get the correct disc for the clutch kit they come sprung ad unsprung. With simple mass I would go sprung and above all install new clutch fork or find someone to weld and reinforce the stocker. Southbend clutches are great but are known to crack clutch forks.

SPEC clutches are known for delaminating, so I would not recommend them to anyone.

I stayed with the dual mass but uprated it by using the 240mm from a B7. It will only work in the six speed 02X and you will need a tranny spacer. Its even smoother than the original B6 dual mass and has significantly more capacity. Coming up on two years on a stroked 1.8T at 22 psi of boost, no issues.

I don't think I'm going to go that route with my B6, my plan is to keep it pretty much as just a daily but I want to build it to max out the cars longevity since parts are getting harder to come by.

Before this I used to build MKII jettas because they were cheap and parts were everywhere but now they're rarer and rarer to find in any kind of decent shape/price. I love my B6 I want to keep it on the road as long as possible before they end up the same way.

FYI, mine is a daily driver. As far a longevity that remains to be seen. I don't see any reason why a modded car cant be built to last. I did a new forged 2 liter stroker motor two years ago and it seems to be holding up well. A lot of the upgrades on mine are done using OEM parts from the S4 (brakes, aluminum rear knuckles, RS4 rear bar, B7 clutch, E code headlights, RS4 rack and servotronic, B7 turbo, B7 oil pump balancer , B7 block and a few other mods).

It may be 20 years old but the updates make it fun to drive.

To the OP, I realized that your looking for a V6 clutch, a lot of the info posted was for the 1.8T

yes it happens, lots more 1.8Ts on the forum! My factory clutch has lasted 346,000 miles and only slips on shifts when I pull my travel trailer. I'm sticking with stock and I hope it's the only clutch swap I'll ever have to do on this car. local shop quoted $3-5K for the swap... I figger everyone uses the same book time, hourly rate and parts markup so why not do it myself and pay myself a few grand (actually I bought a lift with the money I don't have).
